You wonder were the Numerus plays a role? Simple. Plural words get no undefined article, just like in English.

Examples:

E: A girl waits for a bus.
G: Ein Mädchen (neutral) wartet auf einen Bus (masculin).

E: A woman's purse is a mystery for men.
G: Die Handtasche einer Frau ist ein Geheimnis für Männer.
