Art Question

Is it better to practice anatomy in art through trial and error, using your own imagination, or to constantly use reference and copy the realistic picture? I'll try drawing body parts, and I'll have to CONSTANTLY look at my foot, leg, etc, to MAKE SURE I draw it as perfect as possible. Then whenever I draw without reference, I'm not doing as well as I want to. Does a person grow in art better without reference, and just figuring the anatomy out themselves? I feel like if I did that, I'd have the anatomical understanding implanted into my head better, as it would take longer using constant reference.
For those who already have been drawing for quite some time, advice please? I know I've been bent on art for only a couple of days and that it takes years to improve, but I can't stand thinking I'm not using the best learning method out there.

do both. Use a reference at first till you get used to the shape and form then do it without it. If it comes out like you beat it with a hammer go back to the reference.

References all the way, dude. Even the best artists use other pictures as references for poses and expressions and etc. when drawing, even if it's for commissions. You'll never stop using references no matter how good you get unless you draw the same things all the time, else your images won't always come out the way you'd like for them to. From using references, over time, you'll start to develop your own style for drawing. It's the same thing for writing, really; you make your own writing style by reading others' and imitating theirs.

Ohhhh yah. Thanks! I guess that's why I'm already getting good at drawing a really realistic hand, since that's all I've been doing lately. Looking at my hand and drawing it, for hours. XD

All three.
