I imagine it would feel more or less like taking a nice piss. Soft hissing sound and a stream of course since that's really how it is.

Well, there's anecdotal evidence that I've seen which suggests that real skunks do enjoy the feeling of spraying. I'd imagine that it would transfer to anthro ones, too.

I definitely prefer the realistic approach to the art: either two defined streams, or the mist. I don't dislike scent clouds, but I always tend to just thing of them as a way to show the smell, as opposed to the actual spray.

I haven't really thought to much about sound. Maybe I'd go with soft hissing.

Well, I honestly don't know how much research Courter put into Skunk: A Love Story, but he does describe the main character's skunks seeming to enjoy being 'milked' of their musk:

"Homer himself looked pleased. He seemed to get some satisfaction out of being relieved of his musk, just as cows are known to enjoy being milked."

Again, I'd take that with a grain of salt, but it does make sense.

I think skunk relax their spincters or some sort of part in the anal region while tightening the muscles around the scent glands, so I guess it would feel like bearing down or even like farting or defecating. The sound effect, on the other hand, would be like using a squirt bottle, i think. I'm not sure how the skunk feels when they spray, but they do so when they feel that they are in danger, so they may feel quite tense.

Anytime there is a stimulus acting on a sensitive area of the anatomy (the anus in this case), endorphins will be released. I don't know if a skunk's spray burns or soothes as it makes its way out, but in either case, the minuscule amount of pain that could possibly be caused has to be trumped by the brain's natural painkillers. *adjusts glasses smugly*

Anyhows, I imagine it feels a lot like taking a nice hot pee. As for the fluid itself, I've always portrayed it as distinctive streams so my viewers would not confuse it for a fart cloud.

On an interesting side note, I have always loved the smell of skunk, I actually get a little excited when I smell the faintest essence of it. I always thought I was alone, but I've casually asked several of my non-furry friends, and about half of them admitted to liking the scent. I wonder if there is something in skunk scent that chemically acts on the brain's pleasure centers? Weird.

And those are only the ones that freely admit it! I never understood why someone would outright HATE the smell, sure it's stinky and pungent, but it stinks like pure nature.

Full scent, well...at least from a few feet away ^.~ Never been sprayed (and don't really wanna), but I do know it stings eyes and lungs, so that wouldn't work for me. But at a short distance, I don't mind it at all.

I'm kind of curious about getting sprayed myself. I've heard that the stingy feeling wears off after a bit, and you're just left with massive amounts of musky smell. Maybe I'll order up some skunk cover scent so I can test the waters (or oils in this case) without much risk.

This is true. I've been sprayed twice and that's essentially what I got, lots of stink (though my eyes never burned, I was wearing goggles to prevent an eye-spray) and slight burning in the lungs from sheer intensity, but then nothing but lovely musk after a few minutes.

The pure quill scent I ordered though is pretty rough if you sniff it straight from the bottle. Lots of nose-burning and eye-watering, but then that's 100% pure and concentrated in a bottle. A fresh spray gets filtered by air and your own natural scents, so it's not QUITE as intense. Unless maybe you get tagged by a spotted skunk, I know Western spotties from experience are amazingly potent, even nauseating.

I've always thought it would feel both pleasurable to a sense, but also like you'd be squeezing a small balloon with your anal muscles, no real special feeling, just like a rarely used appendage.

Though most parts that use severe motor functions have a lot of nerves, and the little nozzles are right next to the sphincter, which can be sensitive. So they may be very, very pleasurable to do anything with.

I would imagine since its a last line of defense and most skunks put off spraying as long as possible, it prolly isn't a great feeling for them.

Us anthros, however, prolly would find it to be at least pleasurable, and more than likely just short of an orgasmic feeling. Afterall, it is an ejaculation of sorts, just not in a sexual manner. ^.^

I like it as a less realistic gaseous green cloud, especially with a *POOF!* sound. I imagine it would feel... "fluffy" coming out.

Hard to say, there's evidence that supports either pain from the muscle squeezing or pleasure from pressure for real skunks. I know I make it pleasurable for my anthro skunk to spray, so given what it does to me and my partner's libidos it's win-win.

I prefer a realistic spray but will accept a mist-cloud if it's illustrated properly (though to do so, you'd really have to animate it). I'm a realist though and insist on amber-colored spray, since otherwise it's easily mistaken for urine if light yellow or gas if it's green.

1.I don't know if there is any pleasure or pain feeling to doing it.If it felt good in an ejaculatory way (like someone above pointed out) then skunks would do it randomly.Like in the way dogs hump legs,etc.It might feel a little relieving since it's the sacs being emptied.But it's only a split second of relief.Since they have filed musk sacs most of the time they probably don't even notice the feeling until they release.As far as the anthro world is concerned your dealing with a different brain type.A human brain.So that's a different ball game all together.With that I'm sure you'd have skunks that felt all sorts of ways about their natural defenses.I am embarrassed by it,I love to do it,I think it's kinky,I want my glands removed,and so on.

2.I don't know about sound.But in the few movies I have seen with realistic non anthro skunks spraying it sounds like a hiss.Like a squirt bottle,or a squirt of perfume.That's how I describe it in my stories.

3.I like both streams and a mist.I think streams is easier to draw.Especially if it's just a pencil drawing.
I hate when people draw a cloud.Because it's not gas.It's a liquid.And I am confused why so many artists draw it as green.For the love of god it is not green.It's yellowish,to amber,to sometimes clear.

Around the same time I saw a movie on t.v. called Butch and Sundance the early days.I actually caught a little of it on t.v. earlier this summer.A skunk sprays a dude right in the face.It's really graphic.I think the skunk that was spraying (only seen for a few seconds) was a pretend.But the streams were very accurate.I've seen lots of similar scenes in movies,and nature documentaries.

I usually try to draw skunk spray as two streams dissipating into clouds (one of the reasons I make it dissipate is because I worry it will look like diarrhea otherwise!).

some people draw it as clouds to portray the scent, i myself draw it in a cloud like manner. its not always the spray being drawn, but a visual for the horrid and alluring smell all of us here enjoy. that also goes for the color. also, not every one makes it green. some furs make it different colors to be unique. i myself draw my skunk character having a purple colored spray/scent. in general, it more or less depends on the artist and what they like, realistic or not. in the end, its still the spray we all love isnt it?

Have to admit, I initially colored musk green because for some reason I was under the impression it was that color - probably because so many other people color it green as well. Once I realized it wasn't, I made a point to color it various shades of amber...perhaps I should go back and edit some of my older drawings to make the color more accurate!

Also, regarding humanoid anatomy, I always figured that most anthropomorphic skunks/mustelids would rarely use their ability to spray (unless they enjoyed it, or were in a situation that it would really come in handy, ie. dealing with a rapist), and that the ability would be more an evolutionary vestige rather than the highly effective defense system that it is in actual skunks and certain mustelids, so yeah, they'd probably have to make a point to lean over enough and spread the cheeks so as not to get the musk all over themselves! Which is an intriguing thought in and of itself...

Can wolverines actually spray like skunks? I was under the impression that they spray like other mustelids - a fine, invisible mist.

It's definitely just a rumor that skunks mark their territory with their musk. Skunks are known to not return to areas in which they've sprayed (they find the smell repugnant as most other creatures do).

Basically, yes. They might possibly like the feeling of spraying, but they definitely don't like the smell.
