It boggles me slightly. Sure, if you can sell them, go for it. But I don't get why people -want- them. As there's no -real- copyright on characters these days, can't you just make your own and change it slightly? Then call 'Originality'?
I see that a lot as well characters that are almost a duplicate of another which i find very rude for them to do. Sure reference them but dont just slap a spot, stripe, scar or horn somewhere and call them original...
What can you class as originality in a world which is ruled by imagination. It's just as unfair for people to copyright a species and bitch at anyone who uses it without paying for a pre-made.
>.< you want a character drawn by a certain artist^^ lets say he has a sexy species you wish to have as your own and perhaps use as a sex slave *cough*orangejulius*cough* because its so sexy you could just eat him >.< OM NOM
Why not just make your own character that's somewhat like the other person's, but different in a way so you don't have to justify copyright. It's just a -character- of course.
Well, it's a way for the artist to make some extra cash and to make cute characters that they won't ever have to use, but other people can use them. Adoptables are generally themed or a species the artist made and doesn't want other people to use unless they "adopt" the character xD I think of the payment as an adoption fee :D
