Can you even believe this guy? Trying to solicit someone to work on spec is a bit dubious in itself, but not -entirely- unreasonable, should one go about it with ambition and respect. When you ask someone to work for free, you are asking them to devote time and energy to -your- project. You have to be aware that you are asking someone to work for FREE. 'Potential Payment When We Get Published!' is not a paycheck. The work you are soliciting for is, as of the time it is created, done pro-bono. If you want a relationship like this to succeed, the resulting product to be good and your reputation as a serious professional to become established, you need to realize that when you're asking someone to take a gamble on you, there's a certain amount of grace required. You are essentially looking for a creative partner who will stand behind your brainchild. This is difficult to come by, but can work out very well for some who make that connection and work to form a partnership on a level of mutual ownership and respect.
This guy has absolutely none. Here's a practical and educational lesson in exactly what not to do when attempting to find a collaborative partner willing to work on spec or pro-bono.
"I have had enough of whiny, overindulged, self delusional artists telling me what I should pay them for their work." - Rob Tracy, Remedial Comics
Enjoy watching one man light himself on fire. I'm really not a fan of witch hunts, but this one deserves everything that's coming to him. By the way, he'll sure be at NYCC. I hope I get to meet him..! :3c
