It's -really- weird. I mean. It's France and Russia and people who existed but with that kind of J-storytelling twist.
If you give it a chance it is a lot of fun and gets super messed up.

High School of the Dead I hear is really good, there's both a manga and anime.
Baccano is amazing. Not exactly horror, but lots of blood and violence.
The manga for Uzumaki and the Ring is pretty creepy too, if you haven't already checked it out.

The best I've read so far comes from the mangaka Junji ito: Uzumaki might be one of his best known in the states, but I highly recommend Gyo http://stoptazmo.com/manga-series/gyo/ as well. I haven't had a chance to read more of his work yet, but I intend to.

Another I highly recommend is the battle royale manga http://stoptazmo.com/manga-series/battle_royale/ .Definitely gore, some might say horror to some extend. The artist is my highest inspiration for violent imagery. Just beautiful in it's detail and presentation.

Saddly not all the chapters are translated because (to my understanding) a company picked it up and then dropped it. So no ones bothered translating the rest.

I found it to be really dumb.
But most of Junji Ito's other stuff I've read liked, so it's not really a slight against him.

But man, at least Franken Fran is innovative and funny with it's crazy gross gory stuff.
