Popularity

I know it's very common that an artist feels they're not getting much attention. The're a few very succesful artists out there who I've seen gripe about it. How popular does one need to be? Quality or quantity wise there comes a degree of learning how to be happy with what you've got. The artistic growth of a person includes how one feels about their own work and how shy or proud they are about it.
This might sound a bit out of place coming from me, since I don't exactly have the experience of a popular artist, but I've been more and less popular in other areas of my life. I found it really doesn't matter. I'm very content with the quality and quantity of support I get here, I really don't feel the need to get a circle of people around me applauding my words and listening to my actions.
I've sometimes said I could make a pop album if I wanted to, or write a bestseller, but people usually don't respond to that by tempering my "optimism"; they practically dare me in disbelief. "Then why don't you?"
It is for the same reason not everybody who can carry 10 kilos of trash becomes a garbageman. I don't say those things out of arrogance, but out of disinterest. I consider that extremely trivial. If that's what someone else wants, I don't think that's any more or less dishonest.. it's just how I work.
So am I griping here? Not really.. I'm just giving a hint of general advice. Try to find out what really makes you happy, don't focus on the nearest thing lying around.

But in all seriousness, I see what you’re saying and I agree. I’m not much of an artist, but I enjoy doing what I do, and I’m content with that. If others enjoy what I do, then that’s a bonus!
Heh, these days alsmot everyone wants to be a web celebrity…
Was there anything particular that sparked this, or was it more of a spontaneous thought?
I guess it's been building up inside me that I should talk about these things for a bit, it's certainly not a single case. A lot of it has to do with past interactions concerning the matter though. Many people don't really know what they want and I get the impression they don't really question this 'logical' goal.
I mean playing for myself is okay, but meh! That's what I call practice. =P
Ah, popularity! I wonder, it must be nice, but should never be an aim, only a happening along the road of knowledge!
Think of your breed; for brutish ignorance
Your mettle was not made; you were made men,
To follow after knowledge and Excellence!
Popularity can happen to the best and worst of us, some people don't survive.
