So, what's the difference between "anthro" and "furry", in everyone's opinion? This has apparently become quite a semantic divide, and I have to say, I'm a little befuddled as to why it's such a big deal.

Thats my take on it in my opinion, someone may have different to say about it. I myself am an anthro artist, though i respect the fandom because i can share my art with them and not get looked at oddly for doing so lol, hell, i don't think my folks have seen a single sketch iv made because they probably would never understand why i perfer drawing it...and if i had to explain myself..i think it would be way too beyond their understanding lol.
Its come to the point now where if it has plantigrade feet, wears clothes, poses no direct threat in appearance, and appeals to a broad audience I call it 'furry' since that's how I've heard it described so many times over the years. Likewise 'furfag' is some sick twist of herm/inflation/scat/vore/whatever nasty fetish you can come up with...which would appear to me to be the opposite of 'furry' in that it seems more theatening and/or disgusting... 'Anthro' appears to be weres with digitigrade feet, threatening appearances, bad attitudes, but tend to stick along the 'want to appear more realistic in character design' lines. I find the anthros look down on furs and attempt to make their art as realistic (and need I say 'straight sexuality') as possible (see Goldenwolf) in order to attempt to seperate themsevles from the fandom. Anyone who doesn't draw into these two categories is labelled simply as 'fantasy artist' which I suppose is where I fall semantically following that formula with my spiky, horned, glowy characters that don't seem to fit into either 'nonthreatening, wears clothes, plantigrade' or 'realistic in design'.
Now I have to admit I've seen some characters and artists that don't fit any of these things, just the other day I found an otter with a cute fuzzy face that was completely ripped like a bodybuilder...ok I'm gonna come right out and say it...I have no Idea where that falls. I don't know what to think of 'muscle furs' ('fur' I suppose being the operative word here? Maybe it falls into furries? shite.). It's both a tad threatening and a tad cute, somewhat realistic while at the same time being so blown out of proportion you want to shove it aside....I have no idea.
TL;DR: Furry is nonthreatening and unrealistic plantigrade characters, anthro is threatening, realistic, digitigrade...anyone that doesn't fall into those categories gets shoved into one or the other by the fandom.
