[Tech] iPod Touch: Recipe for immediate buyer's regret
15 years ago
If you plan to get an iPod Touch as a poor man's iPhone 4, don't. Literally within seconds of turning it on, I knew it wasn't the same thing.
You know how Apple's all talking up the Retina display of the iPhone and saying it has super fine pixels, LED backlighting, and an IPS panel for accurate colors and great viewing angles? The iPod Touch's Retina display doesn't have an IPS panel. If you read the wording on the site very carefully, they set it up such that when talking about the Retina display of the iPhone 4, they talk about it using IPS technology without directly implying that a "Retina display" necessarily has this feature.
The colors are plainly distorted and inverted when viewed from as little as 5-10 degrees off. That's so little that if you had shaky hands, for example, the slight variation in viewing angle that it could cause would noticeably mess up the colors.
Sure, it doesn't say anywhere on Apple's site that the iPod Touch has an IPS panel. But the language is extremely suggestive that the Retina display is a complete display unit which encompasses the 326 DPI LED-backlit IPS panel. Seriously, how many of you are surprised (or if you knew already, were at one point surprised) that it's actually a completely different display?
This is after taking 30 minutes to actually buy the damn thing, because in Apple stores, apparently they don't have lines, or shelves of stuff to buy, or instructions of any form. You just look for the person wearing a blue shirt whose current customer looks to have the easiest purchase or problem, and hover around them until they finish their current task and notice you. And then they send you to the Genius Bar to actually do your order...? What the fuck.
The only consolation here is that I'll be selling it to work before too long for use as a testing system. I'm just holding onto it now to get familiar with it for development work.
Fucking bullshit, I swear.

FA+

I barely use my K800i anyway x3
yeah, the new ipod has some neat new features but overall its a piece of shite. im happy with my 2nd gen touch
Ultimately, whether or not it's important for it to look good from different perspectives isn't even an issue. The issue is that they made it seem like it had an IPS panel, when it simply doesn't. That's what I'm not caring for.
But to actually answer your question, here are some scenarios where you might not look at it straight-on:
1. There's direct lighting behind you, and you angle it so you can see better
2. You're showing something to another person standing next to you
3. You have it set down to charge or rest on a table or desk and you're looking at it from an angle
4. You're taking a picture with it and you tilt it to change what you're aiming at
5. You're playing a game which has controls that involve tilt and other movement for control
6. It's mounted somewhere (like in a car dock) where you won't usually be able to look at it straight on
Those are just the ones that occur off the top of my head.
It's like apple brainwashing on a propoganda level similar to North Korea. < _ <
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY JOBS!
First time I went there, I had an appointment to fix a work machine. I got there early. I stood in the area where they had a TV showing the upcoming appointments. I saw my name come up, and after a short while, disappear. I had expected them to call my name, or at some point ask me what I was there for, but nothing. Apparently I was supposed to "check in" with them before my appointment. This was never stated in the store or in the appointment instructions. They put me back on the list when I asked why I was taken off, and I had my appointment.
The second time I had another problem with the machine. They offered to do an OS reinstall, which was going to take about 40 minutes. This was done out in an area with the demo machines, not behind a counter or anything. So when I asked if I could come back when it was done, they said the best they could do was look over periodically and try to make sure nobody took it. Fucking seriously, they don't have a dedicated space where customers can't just walk up and grab things? Or they did and they didn't want to use it because they thought I would be okay sitting in their store for the better part of an hour?
And this final time, as I explained, couldn't fucking find a product to buy or a person to buy it from.
I guess they just expect you to walk up to the nearest employee and say "Hey, I don't understand how to do this thing/I want to buy that thing/This device is broken". They expect you to be confused and not know who to ask for what. As such they aren't differentiating between people doing sales, customer education, tech support, store greeting, or anything really. Maybe I'm totally misunderstanding how they do things but fuck, I shouldn't have such a hard time picking an item that I know I want and paying for it.
People go into stores confused usually about something. Their setting actually makes people MORE confused. To the point where even the most basic, inept customer service seems like a godsend. So people leave "happy" after their issue has been resolved.
and about the whole "walking up to an employee thing"... its probably part of the whole stylish apple thing, too. i mean, you have lines in every other store but you cant have that in hipster apple stores! oh no sir, this is HIP and about COMMUNICATION!
fuck it... XD
seriously though, the only thing that is worse are people who buy macbooks only to show them off at starbucks xD

And hell, you missed the ones where I didn't complain. And the one where I referenced you to explain why I wasn't going to complain xD
x10 faster than v2
:D
I suspect the iPod's flash memory is more of a bottleneck, I can't imagine they get that stuff to be crazy fast.
Also, why the heck would you go to a Apple store to get a iPod? You can buy them practically anywhere! Hell you can buy them in special vending machines in malls. The only real reason to go into an Apple store is for the Genius Bar and to play with products(i.e. check social networks and browse YouTube).
I'm not saying it's bad or anything, but I don't need this brand new shiny iPod right now...I'll probably get the 5th or 6th but I don't need a new one any time soon.
Also they update the iPods every year in the 2nd or 3rd week in September. They're really consistent about product announcements unless...
a) they want a new non iPod product out for the holidays
b) they want to release a new product or different product from their normal lineup.
c) they can't think of a reason to have a press event for a minor or somewhat lame product(3rd gen Shuffle anyone?).
If only I could have rescued you, or the world, from this disaster.
I've had the original for a long time and honestly, I can hold more music. That is the only real difference i have noticed.
Oh, and what the hell happened to the 16gb? 8, 32, 64... where is my 16?
No 16 GB is kind of a weird omission, but they'd price it at what, $250 or something? $260? It's so close to the two other price points that they probably think it would cause customers to have to choose more than they want to. I dunno, I'd just not have an 8 gig option, start with 16 gig at $250 (then the pricing makes sense too: they charge $100 for 32 GB extra). They probably prefer the extra sales from the lower price over having all of the nice 2^x GB amounts of space.
So I went to the nearest person I could grab and started asking questions, who simply told me that I should find the time to come down to one of their group meetings next week so they can explain "All I needed to know". I did not go because 1.) It was on a full work day 2.) I was to frustrated that they (seem) to know nothing and are making me adjust to their plans and 3.) It sounded and felt like a damn cult meeting.
I don't want to hate them, I really don't, but they just keep on doing things that get to me.
I promise you, this is purely for professional use, and when I'm done, it'll be sold to work D:
Of course the iPod Touch is gonna be less shinier than the iPhone, because it's a fucking MUSIC PLAYER FIRST. Why the hell would it need a so called proper screen so to look at what music you want to play? Honestly, you're just whining here. If you want a phone from Apple, then just buy the iPhone. And for all the Apple haters here.....stuff it will you? If you don't like it, then just don't fucking buy it!
And before you say that the iPod does more than play music, just stop right there. Being a MP3 player is it's primary function, and I believe the main reason the creators make it less impressive is for that reason, and of course to make money. The other shit is just bells and whistles to make it more attractive and, repeating what I said before, to MAKE MONEY.
the tl;dr version: Get the fuck over it and just don't use if you don't like it
Watch your fuckin' mouth. And shut the hell up.
I don't know who the fuck you think you are, complaining about my opinions and observations that I record and post in my own corner of this site. If you don't care about what I have to say, then ignore it. If you do care, then try to exercise a little intelligence when making comments.
Let me get this completely straight. Apple uses bullshit tactics to make it seem like the iPod Touch has a display that is comparable to the iPhone, never making it clear that the displays are in fact entirely different in a way that makes a big difference in quality. The only indicator that the two displays, bearing the same name, are different... is that they omit some of the specs for the iPod touch display. The only way somebody could realize that they're different displays entirely would be to open the spec sheets side-by-side, see that the iPod touch display specs don't list the brightness and contrast ratio and that they don't explicitly say in the features section that it has an IPS panel.
And you say that of course it's not going to be as good because it's a music player first, and you believe it has a crap screen because it's a music player first and a good screen isn't important. And if we don't like it, we shouldn't buy it. You completely ignore the points that I made as to why it was misleading. Effectively, you missed the point of the journal and just bitched about me pointing out an imperfection in an Apple product.
I also think it's completely silly to say that the iPod Touch is a music player first. Where, pray tell, do you get that idea? When it launched, it had considerably less storage than the iPod Classic, and was larger than the Shuffle and Nano. It wasn't the king of capacity, or battery life, or size. Why make the iPod Touch lineup at all? Because the iPhone was about more than just music and phone calls, it was a new platform for mobile applications and media. For both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, music (and phonecalls for the iPhone) are arguably the least noteworthy features. After all, you can use a phone without a touch screen. You can play music without a touch screen. Why the 3.5" multitouch screen, emphasis on gestures, accelerometer + gyroscope, and 256-512 MB of RAM? Not for freaking phone calls and MP3s. Giant screen for video and displaying a lot of stuff at once, multitouch and RAM and gestures and gyro/accelerometer and all that other stuff for applications. That's in line with everything Apple has ever said about the iPod Touch (think about previous taglines, "The most fun iPod ever"), that's in line with the pricing and hardware, that's the only thing that makes sense to me.
Seriously, can you tell me what the iPod Touch does which makes it a better music player than the other iPods that have come before it and exist now? And can you tell me why the iPhone needs to have a high-quality display while the mere loss of a cell antenna means that suddenly it doesn't have that need? I just don't buy that the iPod Touch is supposed to primarily be an MP3 player.
You missed the overall message. I wouldn't write a journal about this if I thought people, prospective buyers, already knew about it having a crappier screen. If you don't like it, don't fucking buy it? Why the shit do you think I'm pointing out to people that it doesn't have the nice IPS panel (a potential "if you don't like it" for people)? So they can make informed decisions about what it does and doesn't offer them.
I understand that it may have to make some concessions for reasons of price (that's probably why they use a crappier screen, and there's less RAM) and size (the camera can't be anywhere near as nice because it simply needs more depth in the device). I am just annoyed that this is made (I feel) deliberately vague to consumers.
I mean, I don't know how much the subsidy is for the iPhone--the 32 GB model is $300 with a contract. $300 is also what they charge for a 32 GB iPod Touch. Obviously the iPhone has the antenna and other phone parts adding to the cost, but for all we know that adds just dollars to the price and is an added cost easily eaten by the subsidy from the contract. But in a sense I shouldn't have to know this stuff--it should be pretty easy to tell when the phone screens use different technologies when this is mentioned as a bit selling point.
We cool? :3
And as a final note....and don't throw chairs and torches at me for this, but....
I'm a Microsoft man *hides*
* A4 processor
* 960x640 display
* Gyroscope
* HD video recording
* Front-mounted camera
Considerable differences between the 4's and the 3GS. Really, the only difference between the non-aesthetic elements of the iPhone and iPod Touch are (in favor of the iPhone) :
* No LED flash
* Lower-quality camera
* Half the RAM (I think)
* No ear speaker or face proximity sensor (for obvious reasons)
* Display isn't IPS
* No cell antenna (for obvious reasons)
Short of the lack of flash, less RAM and lower-quality display, they're functionally identical. Much more in common between them than the Touch and 3GS.
THIS LESSON WILL TEACH YOU WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY AN APPLE PRODUCT EVER AGAIN.
I don't need to be taught this xD
I'm never buying a TN panel product again if I can help it.
I think it's one of those things that most people don't notice the difference unless it's pointed out to them - but going the other way it's the complete opposite. Get used to IPS panels as your norm, and then switch to a TN. It's like night and day.
Kinda like someone who claims they don't notice the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD. Get 'em used to Blu for a while - then pop in a DVD and they go O.O "Whoa, I never realized how BAD they look!"
* 120 Hz requires very fast response times. I don't think IPS is able to reach this. So for the time being, only TN panels are suitable for very high framerates or stereoscopic 3D gaming/movies.
* Laptops almost never have IPS panels. No idea why this is--they can make them large enough for any laptop and thin enough for the iPhone and iPad. The only good news here is that a good TN panel on a laptop can be almost as good as an IPS (mine is way better than my Cinema Displays at work), and laptops are much more fixed than phones and iPods so the viewing angle can be set once and maintained easily
* Paper weights
I'd be more severely opposed to TN panels in every implementation were it not for this laptop and its 96% Adobe RGB @_@
If I had to guess it'd be that an IPS with fast response wouldn't really have a target audience outside of a small core of enthusiasts. IPS response time uses a different metric than a TN (white-black-white as opposed to gray-black/white-gray) sooo I dunno if the numbers can be directly compared... As for laptops, it might be because few pros would ever regularly use a laptop screen for color critical work, due to the size, pixel density and sub-optimal lighting conditions that a laptop screen would be used in.
I sooo want OLED to become more affordable. Either that or RGB backlights! That'd make me happy! :3
120 Hz IPS would have almost no market because IPS has almost no market -_- People are cheap shits and aren't willing to spend much on computer parts.
Additionally, it wouldn't have kept me from making the purchase because it was something for work and frankly the viewing angle doesn't matter for the application it will be used for.
Even if I was getting it for personal use, though, were I to order it online or from a place that didn't have one on display, I'd be in the same boat. The problem is the misconception that the iPod and iPhone use the same display. Were it not for that, the use of a TN panel wouldn't even be an issue.
-the company isolated the market so only Apple can control it
-it has centrally controlled economy (i mean from the tech point of view mac users can't decide what tech they want to better suit their needs Apple does it for them)
and all this kinda paints a very disturbing picture of community that is stupid so it's easy to control by Apple and would rather give up their freedoms in hands of the big guys so they have less and less responsibilities...
or am I just thinking about it too much...
But wow, DARN YOU SHAKY HANDS! D:
Im still getting one!
I have an android, can i video chat on that?
Yes.
I just ate an apple and I came across this here journal.
Stay away from these useless products tbh.
They sell Core 2 duo systems for what, 2,000+ dollars? I mean hell, I admit I liked PowerPCs when I was a wee little kid in middle school playing Diablo I and StarCraft, but now they're a greedy fucking company with only one thing in mind: "Rip off my customers, FUCK YES!"
I mean an IPhone4? There's other phones out there, like the Droid II / X or Samsung Captivate which can do its job and then some.
IPad? OH WOW, A MORE EXPENSIVE VERSION OF A NETBOOK with LESS FEATURES.
MacBook? FFS, look at this thing. 2,300 for the 17 inch entry level. You can get an ASUS G73 w/ 16 gigs of memory for that much. LOL.
I can go on and on... and I completely agree with you when it comes to Apple screwing people over.
I dunno why people like them lol
How much was it again?
My budget i5 was 650
Uh, over 3000. But that includes tax, shipping, 2 year accidental damage plan, all those goodies. The entry-level, before tax etc, is about $1900 and is the same but with a 1600x900 screen, 128 GB SSD, 4 GB DDR and a 2.53 GHz i5. I'd spend the $150 to get the 1080p screen (I would? Fuck, I did) but that's just me.
So yeahhh, expensive as balls and stupid small for that speed, and yet it's STILL a vastly better deal than a Pro xD
I really do like the G73 though... but that's the gamer me talking, which is itching for some games, though I haven't played any in the past few months.. Just been drawing and meeting people and crap. Mostly on FA and such, hard to believe I almost said 6000 things to people.
xD
Sony VAIOs are amazing honestly, friend of mine had one wayyyyy back in the upper 90's.
My system is just parts built and me constructing it like frankenstein
< == = = = == = = == =
I had a smartphone briefly, was a samsung captivate.
The Super AMOLED screen blew away my current monitor, lol
Thanks for the heads up.
