Easy thing to start off with conversation is to find common ground, the deeper / zanier the better.

Something like:

You: Hey there, how's it going?
Furry: Not too bad, how about you?
You: I'm doing fine, just cleaning up after breakfast
Furry: What did you have?
You: Mole Rat Cereal and Iguana on a Stick
Furry: On a steek? Did you keep your Nuka Cola?
You: Only before Jeff Dunham stole it and I VATS'd his butt
Furry: Hopefully you have enough AP leftover?
You: Nah, ran out of Jet and had to hide.
Furry: <3

I understand. I'm a bit shy, believe it or not and I sometimes get nervous going up to some suiter or somebody and saying hi. I'm afraid of leaving a bad impression and them getting the wrong idea, like I'm some fanboy. So, I just walk away leaving them in my past.
