Every therapist I've ever had ended up moving away right after I really opened up, it left me bitter about the whole thing. It's different for everyone and also depends on what shrink you get, its worth a try.
I would argue it's worth it if it fixes what ails ya. I haven't got any personal experience to go from, though, because I'm obstinate and can't see myself ever going to one.
It's important to note that a Psychologist is not a licensed medical doctor and cannot prescribe pills, they would have to recommend you to a Psychiatrist.
As for your original question... they can help, but as someone said you really have to be able to open up to them (and of course they have to be good at their job). If you can't, you're flushing money down the toilet. The only way you'll know if it will help is to try it unfortunately.
Before you do, think about exactly what you want help with from them. The more specific you can be, the better help they'll give you.
I tried one earlier this year. The same problem of talking to people I wanted to fix kept me from fixing it :( When it comes time to buckle down and do something, I turn into a wet noodle!
Pills are bleh. I often see them make things worse ;c
and reliance on a substance to be happy is bad.
If their first recommendation is medication, without even seeing any blood tests or getting a medical history, GET THE FUCK OUT AS FAST AS YOU CAN.
