My 'lolfursona' (as I don't buy into all of that), is a Pillbug/Sowbug/RolliePollie/
I love the grace and intelligence of a mantis. Is it like me? Maybe. LOL without the grace part.
I do hate how scared most people are. Crushing without thought. But the worst is the reactions people get when they find out you have bugs as pets.
I don't think I could personally eat them...too crunchy. And the idea of eatting the brain, gut, and all...not appealing.
I keep a dubia colony, 1 pair of hissers *got to start somewhere, a pinktoe, a rosehair, and a flameleg T. I also have snails in my aquairum. Would KILL for an illegal African Land Snail (sigh).
I have drawn any...I should make a sexy mantis charater. Hmmmm
I will have to check out blepharopsis.
No dreams or nightmares...*you tell those spiders Ron*
and yeah...no to the other questions.
But here is one for you...
IF you had to pick just ONE species...which is your favorite?
That's so tough ;_; Archiblatta hoeveni, though I've never kept them, they're amazing-looking roaches, and very rare in the pet trade.
2. Spiders, web-spinning seems so goddamn creative. :)
3. Yes all the time. I just don't understand what the problem is. I also don't understand stuff like racism. Like, I just can't wrap my mind around the concept of hating something just because of what it is.
4. I think eating insects seems entirely logical - they are plentiful and nutritious. I think countries that find it taboo are just being stupid. ;) I'd be happy to try them if I trusted the source.
5. I currently have 9 tarantulas (I had 10 but one molted out male and I gave him to a breeder). Over my life I've kept pillbugs, mantises, snails, water bugs, jumping spiders...more I'm sure.
6. This character I'm posting with is a tarantula, but I've had Bug's Life fancharacters before, and I was writing a book about a preying mantis when I was a kid, there were lots of bug characters in there. Again, I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.
7. pitbulllady on DA
8. I dream about tarantulas a lot now that I keep them. I dream that mine get out, or that I'm someplace and randomly find tarantulas wandering around and I have to catch them! I dreamt once my seemani bit me. It hurt but wasn't a big deal. I haven't been bitten by a t in real life (plenty of house spiders though.)
9. Good News, from the James and the Giant Peach soundtrack
10. A Bug's Life, James and the Giant Peach (book as well as movie), my friend BlueBottleFlyer's comic on DA, Charlotte's Web, Cricket in Times Square (not the sequals though), The Ant Bully. Beetlejuice is my favorite cartoon character, but then he isn't a bug, he just eats them. ;)
None, really D: Unless parasites count? I like leeches, though.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Probably a happy little trap door spider. I LIKE MY LITTLE ROOM.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Not really, unless they're being stupid about it. I understand that insects aren't everybody's cup of tea.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I actually like the idea of eating them, they're a great source of protein with not too many calories! I know in a lot of places they're served up as tastey treats. It seems to be more Westernised countries that have insectivorous issues. possibly because they seem to view them more as icky creepy critters than snacks.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I currently can't keep any inverts atm, though I would love to keep either emperor scorpions or possibly a snail. Snails are awesome. Maybe a tarantula.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
I don't think a giant steam-powered spider counts. I did have a spider lady though, somewhere. I've drawn a roachy dragon and have a doodle of your Ingrid that I never liked enough to scan.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
I would have to agree with you on blepharopsis. There's another guy who had some beautiful jewel beetle photos, but I can't recall his gallery :c
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
Do nightmares about Starship Troopers' bugs (and zombie JCBs) count?
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Earthworm Jim? (Do worms count?)
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
The warrior bugs from Starship Troopers (even if they do give me nightmares), Zorak, the ant from Honey I Shrunk The Kids (I CRIED OKAY)
2) Earwig. Just been my persona/nickname for years and years now. Maternal species, and a lot of stigma attached to them despite them being harmless bugs, resounds pretty strongly with me.
3) Oh yeah, all the time. Once when I was headed for the bus turnaround back in high school, I caught three girls who found a giant water bug (very far from any water, weirdly) and it was running in a panicked manner away from them while they sprayed it with perfume. I yelled at them and picked it up, and brought it home to rinse off, but eventually it died from being poisoned by all the crap they dumped on it. It really angered me, it was so senseless. Not to mention I often get sneers from people when I explain the earwig thing, trying to make them understand that they're actually a pretty cool, fascinating species with interesting factoids and behaviours.
4) I'm fine with the eating of insects! I'm not sure I could do it though, I worry about the stabby bits. It's probably seen as taboo because insects are seen as "dirty", because they're usually cleaning up detritus and people assume they are what they eat.
5) I do not keep any invertebrates, but if I could, I'd love to keep hermit crabs or even mole crabs. Crustaceans are rad.
6) Tons. Earwig, after all. I've also drawn anthro ants, mantids, weevils, assassin bugs, stick bugs, pill bugs, butterflies, mayflies... the list goes on. Definitely a common occurrence for me.
7) I also am a huge fan of Igor!
8) Yeah, they're not overly common, but I tend to have either dreams of being attacked by yellow jackets (was pretty traumatized as a kid by them) or scorpions. Once I dreamt I was an earwig though, complete with Honey I Shrunk The Kids viewpoint.
9) Boris the Spider is the only one I can think of. Otherwise I listen to music that comes across as "buggy", like Chris Clark's music.
10) Weirdly, no. I don't tend to like invertebrate characters unless I make them. I can be kind of snooty about my standards. D:
2. Millipedes. 8D They mosey around and are pretty chill.
3. All the time. :/ I am tired of people going "Hurr, this is smaller than me, thus I should kill it or disturb it."
4. People do it, and seem to enjoy it. Eating cow is taboo in some cultures, I see no difference between that and the taboo about eating insects.
5. No. D8 I would love an African giant millipede, a mantid of some sort, and possibly some wingless roaches..
6. I don't draw often.
7. Same as yours. 8D He's delightful.
8. Nope!
9. Nope. D8
10. Gleep and Gloop from the Herculoids. 8D
I don't think I could say i'm -afraid- of any of them, but there'd be some that, if I encountered them in person, i'd be nervous around. I think the only urban invertebrates i've run into that i'm a little spooked by are house centipedes, and only because they're so fast! I still love them, though, and i love catching them and taking pictures before i relocate them, but i don't think i've ever handled one and I probably won't.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Probably earthworms. I really, really love them. I love all worms (that includes literally all of the worms, terrestrial or aquatic/marine or parasitic). Earthworms and polychaetes are my faves, though. And then aside from worms I guess my favourite inverts are beetles, which I know is an enormous group, but it's so hard to narrow it down! I like the big species, though.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
All the fucking time. Insects & arachnids both. Part of me can understand why one would be creeped-out by a spider, and even I don't like to have 'pest' insects in my home, but I still don't like to kill them. Especially not spiders; if I find a spider in my house, I generally just leave it alone (after taking pictures, that is).
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. They're an abundant resource that maybe more 'civilized' societies ought to be utilizing. They're nutritious! I don't think I could ever eat an insect, though... I have a big thing about textures, and I think I would probably puke if I tried to eat any insect big enough to be very gooey inside... Eugh. But I could maybe try eating smaller ones, like ants or crickets, I guess... Not really looking for an opportunity to try them, though, lol.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I don't have any right now, but in the past I've had an ant farm, two millipedes (one giant african and one of another species that looked very similar but never grew to the same size, so I'm not sure what it was), and two cockroaches from i think new guinea (not positive what species, i took them in on behalf of a friend when she moved out of state).
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Only a small handful of times. I'm honestly too afraid of other people who consider themselves entomophiles (is that a word?) being all nit-picky about exact anatomical correctness. I'd want to get them exactly right, but I'm very intimidated by how complex their little bodies often are, and I'm afraid I wouldn't do them justice.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
Blepharopsis as well!
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
I have had pleeeeeennnty, but I can't recall them in enough detail to write them out now. Sometimes they've been nightmares, which is always weird to me upon waking, because like I said earlier, I'm not really afraid of any bugs. In dreams they can be scarier :c but i've had awesome ones too, so it evens out.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
can't really think of any right now...
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
again, i can't think of any off-hand aside from earthworm jim, and i'm not really familiar with the show any more. i saw it a few times, but i don't much remember any of it.
Yellowjackets and bees... especially those africanized bees sound scary as hell but I lose it once I see a yellowjacket in the room!
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Probably a jumping spider. Or outside arthropods... A SNAIL.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Uuuuugh yes. DX Why the hell do people kill harmless creatures simply because they are small or have "too many" limbs, etc. etc. I view it as the same as killing your neighbour just because you don't like their face. Sure okay, I don't like it when there's bugs crawling around me (mainly because I'm afraid they might get squished and then I'd feel bad about it)... Also, this blog post just... pisses me off... I understand phobias and such but when it comes to just ... mindlessly killing something just because it just happens to be there... Yeah I uh. Why.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
Haven't tried that yet... I'd like to though. I feel about it in a similar way as eating any other animals... But I dunno about that taboo thing much.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
Eeeee I don't own any pets at the moment, but years ago I had been thinking about the idea of a tarantula... I've been thinking of cockroaches lately though, they're pretty neat. (yes, you might've infected me with that, haha)
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
YUS. Spiders, flies, grasshoppers, ants (I drew a few comics with anthro ant characters whee), butterflies, dragonflies, mosquitos, (bumble)bees, beetles, moths, some alien wasp-like monster bug and a humanoid character based on an assassin bug (and a teensy bit on a bed bug)... having friends who know stuff about invertebrate critters helps with inspiration. XD
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
Oh man that is the only one I remember. Damn his work is ... whoa.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
WELL I've had several horrifying dreams of being stung or swarmed by bees. Must've been because I had read about africanized bees and it seems to have traumatized me. I've never been stung by bees, so I dunno what would happen...
I've also had dreams with flies and maggots... Lovely.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
I used to like The Cure's Lullaby which had a humanoid spider who eats children, sort of a boogeyman character...
David Bowie's Glass Spider has quite a fascinating story, and it sounds cheesy but I love it!
I like how catchy They Might Be Giants' Spider is, but I ... yeah I get a kneejerk reaction out of the phrase "step on spider!"
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
Miss Spider from James and the Giant Peach
Jeeves Weevil from Courage the Cowardly Dog
I also liked the mutant cockroach in SuperJail
Arukenimon/Arachnemon from Digimon was badass
Clark Nova from Naked Lunch was... hmmm, repulsive but hilarious.
Kaneda from Franken Fran (especially later when her face is entirely bug-like X3)
The Zephonim from Soul Reaver (not invertebrates per se, but...)
There's probably a few more that I'm forgetting...
Anything that lands on my face. Other than that I'm cool with them.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Hmm, I dunno really.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Yes, most of the time. Snakes too.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I think it's gross. I don't even eat shellfish. (or regular fish). As for the second part, well, probably because it's gross.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I have always wanted to touch one of those big millipedes but I am afraid of keeping anything less durable than a cat. My shop is full of spiders though. Like, full of them. I have to clean webs off of everything constantly.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Yeah, and I need to draw some more.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
The same. I found him on photo.net looking for pill millipedes one day.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
I dreamed I was driving my sandrail around this- oh wait. Actually I have recurring dreams about large talking spiders. Usually about a foot long or so, and i just have normal conversations with them. They're usually just sitting there, and I'll toss them a bug or something and just have a chat. Sometimes they're brightly colored, sometimes not. That probably means something, but damned if I can figure it out.
Hmm, I can't really think of any for the last two.
JUMPING SPIDERS, afraid of other spiders if they are in the house (like HUGE ones), or are very close to me in the house (I can stand the house spiders being in the corners), but the jumping ones with their eyes and calculated moves scare the crap out of me T.T I know there are probably more but spiders are the biggest fear that comes to mind first.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Don't think I relate to any of them o.O
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
I just hate that my grandma tries to kill bees that are OUTSIDE with spray just because she is afraid of them. -.-
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I know I couldn't eat them.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I don't but if I could I would love some hissing roaches =3
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Kriticocious will probably be the only thing close to an invert I'll get, been thinking of having a robber fly be a pet to her...creepy eyes but looks weird enough to like...
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
I don't have one, the only photographer of insects I have faved is yours X D
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
Haven't had any for a while and don't remember the ones I had
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Bug-a-Boo! Which I don't know who sings it but it was on Mousercise XD
"Lets do the bug-a-boo, come on and shake a leg or two. From the big grasshopper to the tinny teeny bopper. They know what they love to doooOOOoooo..."
and the song they had at the end of Arachnophobia. and High Hopes because of the ant in it o.O
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
Not sure at the moment, memory on that is bad right now D = Only thing I can think of is watching Antz over and over again...
House centipedes. ;____; I would never kill one since they're beneficial, but they are SCARY FAST OH GOD THOSE LEGS
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Hmmm... probably snails. They're slow, kinda chubby, and in my mind gullible.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Sometimes. It's a lot of unreasonable fear that leads to acts of unnecessary violence tword them that pisses me off. I have gone out of my way to help an invertebrate before. (letting out trapped flies, moving worms off of roads/sidewalks, relocating spiders, etc.) They are extremely important to this Earth and quite frankly we'd be doomed without them. They deserve respect, just like any other living thing.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I think (and this applies to all animals meant to be consumed) that so long as they are treated well before hand, killed humanely, they won't hurt or kill you if you eat them, and their numbers are not in danger in any way then eat as many as you want. I think countries find this taboo because they consider insects to be dirty, filthy creatures automatically.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
Yes! I have 1 G. rosea and my own small colony of hissers. I used to own snails but I moved and they were considered a pest species so I couldn't bring them with me.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
I have drawn them, but I don't have any actual characters.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
I love blepharsopsis too! So, to name another, http://dark-raptor.deviantart.com/ is pretty cool.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
Nope, non. :C
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Hmmm... I don't think I've heard any!
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
The aliens from District 9! I love that movie sooooooo much. <3 I love Christopher.
2. Despite having no bee character, I relate most to the honeybee.
3. I think it's unfair. But a lot of things are drilled into people by childhood and the best thing I can do is educate.
4. Mealworms and locusts are tasty. Any taboo against entomophagy is founded upon emotion and fear, not rationality. They're pound-for-pound healthier than the crops they eat.
5. I keep giant cave roaches.
6. I have a couple dozen insect characters, most featured in short fiction. You already know about Celio, methinks.
7. Too many!
8. I've had dreams where the ceiling gets heavy and bursts open with purple wasps.
9. "Moth in the Incubator" by the Flaming Lips. I think a lot of jazz is very insectile, too.
10. Do have to second kutakukinnoin's fave of Clark Nova. Gregor Samsa of the Metamorphosis. The slakemoths from China Mieville's Perdido Street Station.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why? Hmm, can't really think of any.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects? Yes. Really upsets me how some people can't see the beauty I do in some invertebrates; such as the metallic iridescence on some new-world mygalomorph species).
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo? I personally can't stand the thought of it, and am one of those who find it taboo.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could? I've had various species of mantises, as well as terrestrial hermit crabs and tried (unsuccessfully) to keep freshwater fiddler crabs. I'd really like to have some mygalomorphs (particularly T. Blondii), but an anaphalactic reaction to urticating hairs from a tarantula as a kid pretty much nixed the chance of that happening.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters? I used to draw invertebrates as a kid, but haven't in years.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW) I would have to say you and
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share! Can't recall any off the top of my head.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs? Not as far as I can tell.
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character? I think I'd have to say The Deadly Mantis. A rather laughable B-movie made in the 50's about a gigantic praying mantis that wreaks havoc along the east coast of the US.
2. I've always felt closest to arachnids of all types, from spiders to scorpions to mites.
3. I try and educate people where I can, and have saved many a spider or other similar bug from being killed on many an occasion. My girlfriend had a phobia of all flying insects as well as arachnophobia, and I've helped educate her so she's not as bad around them anymore. I even had her agreeing to me getting a tarantula, but we decided against it for the time being with how expensive it would be. Maybe once I have a career and own a house.
4. Same way I am with the eating of anything with protein. It's nature.
5. I've wanted a Mexican red-kneed tarantula since I was 7 and saw it in a book of mine. I'd also love a giant centipede. I have experience with raising crickets to feed bearded dragons, as they were a self-replenishing food. I also had some stick insects and a shield backed katydid.
6. I really, really need to make an arthropod character. I'd been meaning to for ages.
7. Holy crap, mine's the same as yours! *high fives*
8. None that I can remember...
9. Ugh, it's late... I can't think of any off the top of my head.
10. Lol oh god all I can think of is Spiderman. Oh, and District 9, with the Prawns/Poleepkwa. I liked Ants and Bugs Life too.
Ffff so bedtime for me.
2. Beetles! I don't know why, but toddling, cute, fat little beetles make me so happy. Crabs, too. Little, cute shore crabs ;;
3. It's definitely disappointing. Even my brother thinks they're "disgusting", which really took me by surprise, considering we spent so much time outside as kids with my dad. I thought he'd taught us better than that.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
When in Rome, I guess.. I don't believe I've ever eaten any (not on purpose, anyway), and when it comes to watching people eat them alive it just makes me sad for the bugs :[I've been linked to videos on Youtube of game show contestants being dared to eat live hissing cockroaches and it just makes me sad to think of them... crunching D:
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I used to have stick insects as a child, but now I have Madagascar hissing cockroaches :> I'd love to have stick bugs again someday, too!
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
I've drawn a few cockroaches in jest, nothing serious, though I've thought about making invert characters... Their designs would probably be dumbed down a bit to make drawing them less involved/time consuming.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer?
I don't have one favorite in particular, though I am watching Zeenon on DA who has some amazing macro insect pics :) Definitely worth checking out!
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
The only dream that comes to mind happened when I was expecting my cockroaches in the mail, and I dreamed they all arrived dead! Turns out all of them arrived safe and sound :>
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Hm.. this is a tough one. "Insects" by Oingo Boingo?
Buzzing insects make me want to dance~
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
The too-slick beetle from Thumbalina :P
TICKSOMIGODGETHEMOFFMEEEEE! *giggle* Seriously, wood-ticks drive me batty.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Hmmm, the mantids- mellow and completely laid back, until you threaten them, then they're super fast and ruthlessly direct. Though I should really say that I admire them more than I'd relate to them- they're pretty cold and scary when they get going and I'm not like that at all. Identify? Possibly the butterflies- flitting around, making love to the roses... Or critters like the paper wasps who sculpt such pretty nests.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
"Populace"<--- there, fixed that for you (your "populous" is spelled correctly, but it's not quite the right word for the context)... Yes, and it pisses me off even more when the people I stop from killing them out of boredom look at me like I've turned green and grew another fucking head. *sighs*
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
No biggie, really- I've eaten them since I was a kid, though not very often. Ants, chocolate bees, crickets and meal-worms, both fried and in candy. Yeah, I'm weird-as-knees-on-a-fish in this culture. LOL As for the taboo, I suspect it has a lot to do with their supposed "filthiness" and the idea that only impoverished, "uncivilized" nations eat them as a matter of course. In short, "You eat bugs? Ugh, why? Are you that poor?" Such a silly notion- ever see how big beetle grubs can get? The size of jumbo prawns! No shell, no bones, ALL protein! Fast reproduction, easy to raise, plentiful and cheap. The Thai have some really cool cuisine, one that includes grubs and other buggy critters as a food-source.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
Not in any kind of formal cage-setting, though I've happily hosted various mantids and black widow spiders in my garden. I even allowed a dainty little paper wasp to build her nest on my Organ Pipe cactus for several months before we decided that we had to relocate it. The nest was getting too big, and my big cactus was near where a lot of children hung out- I didn't want them getting stung, so we captured the wasps (gently, with a butterfly net) and put them into a cooler with a towel-covered frozen block to calm them down, then drove them- nest and all- to a wilderness area and released them (after tying the nest into a tree so they could continue building on it).
I'm not sure what species I'd like to try keeping, probably Tarantulas.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Yup. I'm rather fond of nudibranchs. I have one character who is an alabaster sea slug- I haven't named him, yet, though. And mantids- I love mantids. did a belly-dancer mantid that I haven't finished- maybe I should...
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
I've had many nightmares with invertebrates- mostly involving some sort of leech-like worm. Can't think of any nice dreams with bugs, though, pity...
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
"Insects" by an Industrial band I like (I think it was Project Pitchfork or Informatic, can't remember. It was some dreamy, mildly eerie, instrumental thing, really atmospheric and neat)...
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
The pill-bug acrobats from A Bug's Life.
Centipedes would make me feel really uneasy if I encountered one, considering how fast and venemous certain species are. I'd rather avoid them, I do find them to be fascinating though.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Tough question, i'd go with Extatosoma tiaratum (Giant Prickly Stick Insect). Used to have them as a kid and always thought they looked really cool and somewhat dangerous but are really mellow creatures.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Plenty of times, it's sad how a lot of people can't see the value insects have for nature. What also pisses me off is when someone goes apeshit whenever a bug is flying around that looks a little bit like a wasp. If they would only take a few seconds to take a good look at it they would see it's up to no harm.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I've eaten insects on a rare occaison, some crickets, grasshoppers and even a scorpion. I know that they are healthier for you than a steak and if a lot of countries would start eating insects it could benefit the world greatly. Sadly they taste pretty horrible. (I really had to hold myself from throwing up after downing that scorpion >>) I don't see insects becoming part of everyones daily diet for atleast another 100 years.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
The only two invertebrates i've kept so far were giant prickly stick insects and Pachnoda marginata (Sun beetles). After they died (I took good care of them, don't worry) I didn't really bother getting any new one's but in the future I might go for a praying mantis.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Nope.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
I once had a pretty disturbing dream where I was in a huge cave and these gigantic spiders, around the size of a small car came crawling from every crack and awfully close. I didn't really realize I was dreaming so it made me feel frightend, didn't get eaten thankfully. That would have probaly made me a lot more terrified of actual spiders.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Insects by Oingo Boingo for sure. Agata Spider by Dissociactive and even though this song isn't about insects, it does have some awsome cover art featuring praying mantises! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzJKynG9i5o
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
The Tick. Spoooooon! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcm-J7lQT3w
And of course Earth Worm Jim, if he counts as an invert. :>
I have a consistent unease around spiders. I love them, but they still scare me.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Spiders, ironically enough I suppose.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
When people get freaked out about my pet cockroaches, yes.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
If they tasted good, I'd probably do it. Not sure where the taboo came from, other than snobbishness.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I keep five cockroaches. I used to keep a wolf spider as well until recently.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Fairly regularly, though I don't have any consistent characters.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer?
I don't know that I have a favorite. I follow an insect group on deviantArt that has amazing photos, but not from any one artist.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
For some reason I have regular nightmares about my cockroaches having millions of babies.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Cockroach by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
Charlotte. :)
2. Peppered cockroach. Calm, but can get upset over something small at rare times. Misunderstood even though what I offer could be very beautiful.
3. Yes. Insects are helpful and have a real beauty.
4. I make cricket dishes for halloween every year. I don't know why it's taboo is some countries. I probably couldn't cook an insect I found adorable XD
5. Roaches: Peppered, hisser, orange head, discoid, dubia
Scorps: Asian forest, Flat rock, and evil, I mean desert hairy
Other: Rose hair tarantula, african millipedes, superworms
6. Akula (discoid cockroach) and Tanny (gypsy moth)
7. You, actually! You take photos of bugs that aren't boring, for text book looking pics that I usually see. You give the photos personality.
8. I have spells of reoccurring dreams about being covered in little black spiders. They're comforting in the dream, never frightening.
9. ^_^; Don't know any
10. Earthworm Jim!! And maybe the buggy parasites from Cloverfield as well. they make the cutest little sounds.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why? Slugs. Because... well. Actually I just think slugs are cool.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects? Sometimes. I'm always trying to save bugs that get into stores.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo? I think it's better than eating meat! I guess some people don't know shrimp are basically little bugs? I can't figure it out.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could? Manti, dozens of them. Not right now, I'm pressed for space.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters? I used to draw an anthro cricket when I was like in 7th grade.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? zugie-k I think? He's on here.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share! One time I had a dream there were tarantulas on me, but I woke up and there weren't, so I went back to bed because that's not even a fear of mine.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs? ...I don't listen to that much music. La Cucaracha?
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character? BRUNDLE FLY. Gregory from DBZ.
Spiders/tarantulas/daddy long legs. I use to play with them but after numerous accounts since I was little I developed a really bad phobia. :( Like I've cried, stopped breathing, puked. I really want to get therapy when I can afford it.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
MOTHS! I love moths! Something about when I see them, it's like a comforting feeling. If I ever get a tattoo it will be something involving a giant moth on my back. I also plan on making of moth costume someday.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Not as upset as I do with rats where I will rant. But sad, yes.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I had a scorpion lollipop and it was yummy. I think it's like any other food really. I think certain places find it taboo because they think it's gross. I'm sure some places it's due to reasons of religion or spirituality though.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
No, mainly because of time, space, and finances.Moths! I also think certain cockroaches are gorgeous, giant centipedes are neat, and giant slugs are pretty cute too.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
When I was younger I drew TONS of anthro moths and wasps. They were my favs. I should dig them up and post them.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
I don't really have one, but I LOVE what you post. Your colours, angles, different species you don't typically see. I wish I could watch you, but due to the arachnophobia I can't.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
Plenty of spider nightmares. Usually they are very normal like life, unlike my really bizarre dreams I normally had. A long time ago I had a strange one where I was running. I kind of was running next to this maze like ditch. I finally look back at what I'm running from, tripping in the process. It was this big long thing that is a little hard to explain. It kind of had the face of a spider, and looked like a cluster fuck of spiders. Almost like a spider centipede, spiderpede? haha It was more of a dream than nightmare though, it's scarier when it's like real life and just a normal spider for some reason.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
I'm sure there are a bunch I can't think of. This mentions leeches in the beginning...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYAiZuVSFu8
Also Leeches by In Flames, not really about leeches themselves though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33W_gyP1pQo
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
Again I'm sure there are some I can't think of at the moment. I loved the ones in James and the Giant Peach actually now that I think about it! You also didn't mention books, but the spider in The Last Unicorn, I definitely had at least a tear run down after they hear her crying. Actually the butterfly from the book and movie too. I also like the caterpillar in Labyrinth.
the only invertebrate that even slightly freaks me out is the ornate harvestmen. Really really random thing to be creeped out by but haha.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Centipedes all the way. I started having dreams about the Centien alien race when I was a very very young child. They looked like centipedes so that is why I connect to them so much.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Yes very very much so; it affects me in the way that I would love to keep and share more exotic species but my family that I still sadly live with isn't very supportive. So I keep my hobby to myself.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I'm okay with people eating insects; they are very nutritious! I wouldn't eat any of my guys myself but I don't mind others doing it. I'm sure westerners find it nasty because they tend to think of themselves 'above' eating insects.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
I have a small colony of dubia and harlequin cockroaches. I raise random beetles from larva when the opportunity arises. I used to own centipedes and millipedes all sorts of critters. I have an avic avic Tarantula as well.
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
I have quite a few; hard to name them all.
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
Same! I saw them quite awhile back thank you for reminding me of them haha.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
All the time. I had a vivid dream of some kind of extra large weevil burrowing in my arm as well as huge centipedes crawling under my skin. They were awesome dreams. Also the dreams about my Centien race I believe count and those are numerous.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Lullaby by the Cure I believe haha
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
I can't really think of many right now :< I do love the cockroach and fly in Courage the Cowardly Dog
Earwigs. Sorry earwigs. :( It's nothing personal.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Banana slugs. My first encounter with one, at the age of toddling, camping in the woods, was one of terror. My mom slapped me for freaking her out screaming, thinking I'd encountered a bear or cougar. After that, people couldn't keep my hands off of them. My sister and I would "catch" them, line them up, and stick little pieces of construction paper with numbers written on them to their backs (they stuck by themselves). We'd leave and come back an hour later to see which slug had crawled farthest to win the race.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Yes (+ arachnids, molluscs, etc.). Poor buggies.
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I feel the same way about eating insects as I do about eating other animals -- I don't.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
Right now I have about twenty nerites and my wife has hermit crabs.
In the past I had #9 mantids, tailless whip scorpions, walking sticks, tarantulas, and my beloved African giant black millipedes. I also have had many temporary pets of many catch-and-release critters -- various spiders, banana and other slugs, land snails, etc. At the zoo in the educational department I worked with tons of different bugs, including roaches. Some day I hope to have buggies again. I miss them a lot. I'd loooove to have roaches.
It seems I don't have too many bug photos uploaded. Here's a picture of my two pedes' tank: http://velvetdragon.com/images/pets.....-02-05b-sm.jpg

6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
I've drawn toooons of banana slugs. Here's a recent, WIP (still not glazed) banana slug ceramic sculpture! http://lh3.ggpht.com/_r0EbGl-sHDA/T.....207_142430.jpg
I'm sure I've drawn others as well. Many people have drawn my personal character (a dragon) with various bugs and inverts.
Trigger is a recurring banana slug character I've had since I was in grade school. *lol*
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
Saaaaaame, that stuff is amazing! Some great herp shots as well.
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
I was three or four years old when I had it, and remember it in perfect clarity.
In the dream, it was night.
My parents were watching TV in their two big black leather recliners. I was sitting on the floor, when I realized my sister wasn't around. I heard the water running outside... that deep sound through the house when the hose is on. I looked at my parents and they didn't seem concerned, but somehow, I was.
I got up and headed outside to the backyard, where we had a cement patio. My sister was playing in the mud and dirty with the hose on (as we were apt to do as kids), facing the house. She was in danger. Everywhere, from all directions, giant slugs were coming to get her. They would hurt her or kill her.
I got an axe and started killing the giant slugs, hacking off their heads, saving her life. Some would come for me, but mostly I was protecting Jess. All the slugs were dead except one. It was the King Slug. It had four lump-like legs. First I cut off its tail, the each of its legs, one by one, but it kept coming at her. Finally, I cut off its head and Jess was safe.
That was how I took on Slug's Medicine.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
"Cockroaches nibbling in your ear! Cockroaches nibbling in your -- cockroaches nibbling in your -- cockroaches nibbling in your ear!" From Dot and Keeto -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090960/
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
Xenomorphs from the Aliens movie series.
But I love a lot of the others mentioned here too. I LOVED Earthworm Jim and played the video games, too, and I can't count how many times I've read and seen Charlotte's Web. And the Slakemoths from Perdido Street Station were AWESOME.
Also the cockroaches from the X-Files episode "War of the Coprophages". "Bambi? Her name is BAMBI?" "Are you sure it wasn't a girly scream, Mulder?"
Mosquitoes.. srsly, the worse, bug, EVER!!
I can't stand bugs with long antennas.
2. Which invertebrate do you feel you relate the most to, and why?
Bumblebees <33 They are fuzzy and cute, and I find them harmless. It's the only bug I can be as near to closer to my nose.
3. Do you ever get upset at how the general populous views insects?
Wasps. They are actually harmless. They clean up for us.. such as flies!
4. How do you feel about the eating of insects? Why do you think certain countries find it taboo?
I find it disgusting! We had that subect in class once, most of my classmates had to go to the bathroom to puke.. including me.
5. Do you keep any invertebrates? If you don't own any, which would you like to own if you could?
A tarantula :3 They are fuzzy and cute. I have a tarantula plush, which can cover my face.. he's called Cody <3
6. Have you drawn any invertebrates, anthro or non? Or have any invert characters?
Nope, not a single one
7. Who is your favorite insect photographer? (Mine is blepharopsis.deviantart.com - just WOW)
I don't watch bugs ..
8. Ever had any buggy dreams/nightmares? Share!
I've had several!!
I dream about BIIIG bugs, making big "BZZZZ" noises... mosquitoes are mostly in my dreams... I once dreamed I tried to slap one with a huge flyswatter but it refused to die.
9. Favorite songs that mention/are about bugs?
Uh no
10. Got a favorite invert cartoon/tv/movie/game character?
It was once on nickelodeon.. uh, a girl with crickets as parents.. I can't remember the name.. maybe "Spooki" was it.. I dunno
