Anyone know of a good digital art program to learn on?
I have so much trouble trying to understand layers in photoshop.
I guess more specifically, I can't understand how to change between layers in photoshop elements, and can't FIND my layers in Corel.
!~#@$%
I've been going through youtube videos and I can't understand the whole layer thing. Everyone just moves to the damn coloring, and I have NO idea what's going on. No one bothers to explain HOW exactly, they're painting behind their lines.
Can anyone point me to a good youtube video series, or even just a web page that says in text, step1, 2, 3, etc?
I'm so frustrated!
I just. don't. understand. layers.

Sai works well for crisp tablet drawing and the files are about the same size as PS. Artrage simulates real media really well, but the file sizes get huge.
Think of layers as a stack of separate pictures.
Transparency/opacity lets you see/hide what's farther down in the stack. The more transparent, the more you can see of what's farther down in the stack. The more opaque, the less you can see.
To select which picture in the stack you're drawing on, select its layer in the layers dialog.
Remember to save in a format that understands layers, like whatever GIMP's default format is. THEN save a different copy as something like PNG, or if you need animation, GIF.
1. Put lines on their own layer in black and white.
2. Set the blending options for that layer to "multiply".
3. Do your coloring on another layer below it.
