Don't get whipped by chains and birch branches and carried off to hell by a horned, lecherous borderline pedophilic goat demon, now. Unless you're into that kinda thing.
they're mostly a 19th century invention, when most of the current dutch/belgian sinterklaas mythos was invented by writer Jan Schenkman (although the celebrations themselves go back to the middle ages). The possible links of Sinterklaas with Odin mentioned in the Wikipedia article are also mostly invented by Schenkman. Before the 19th century Sinterklaas worked alone in the Netherlands and Belgium, as opposed to central Europe where he had the Krampus, Knecht Ruprecht, Pere Foutard or other sinister or evil helpers. One of the Frisian islands in the north of the Netherlands do have a sort of Krampusnacht called Sunderum that is a seperate thing from the Sinterklaas festivities.
I wanted to go up to Munich when I heard about it, but I've only been in Germany for a week so far and am not that organized yet. XD Sounds like a blast though!

I love the folklore of other nations. The states have nothing that interesting...

Now if it was an horned, lecherous borderline pedophilic equine demon that might be more acceptable
