why do you need to explain WHY you fave things? o.o

A long time ago I had a gallery on my site that showed fan work that people did for me, or work that I commissioned from friends who were on hard times and wanted money. I liked seeing very talented people render my characters for fun. It then generated a slew of work from people who couldn't draw very well and wanted their fan art posted on my gallery, and I didn't feel like explaining why I didn't do anything with it, and left their emails unanswered. I just tried to avoid the awkwardness here by not faving things. But I've entered an entirely new realm of indifference about it. So, now I am.

I have been pondering this very question since the first time someone threw a pissy fit over me not commenting with the fav.

If I have something to say, I'll say it. I refuse to spam with short praise, and you simply cannot force compliments or criticism.

Speaking personally, I always find it a compliment when a commissioner favorites the work I've done for them, though most of the time I encourage them to post it in their own gallery :)

That happened way back when I hosted a fan art gallery on my old site a long time ago.

Why would you do that? That's kinda silly, people or fans have no say in what YOU like as a person and have no right to ask you why you favourited something you did, that's your business not theirs, and just because you're a very popular and known artist doesn't make you your fan's property or anything.

I have never come across a demand to know favoritism for favorites. Usually when I see people who have nothing in their favorites, I get the impressions of one of two things. One, that they want to keep things on the down-low. Or two, that they think too much of themselves and don't want to "promote" other artist's work. I usually lean towards the former because, after some thought, I find it hard to believe that artists are not moved or intrigued by other artists in some way. Regardless, welcome to Fav-ville. =P

I only fave my commissions, or picture involving my characters too. Otherwise, when I like a picture, I leave a comment.

I like comments too. But sometimes I find it hard to comment on some pieces without saying something that's either obvious or something that's been said loads already, which is why I only fave sometimes

that is true, the "this looks sexy/great/amazing/awesome" comments gets a little tiresome and redundant, I like them, but they're kinds samey. Thats why I like to describe my affection for the image more, or just comment, because I know I like comments, all of em^^

I try to comment on the technical side of art, such as tone and anatomy etc. But sometimes I just want to be quick so I'll just go

I'm deeply influenced by your style but I haven't drawn any of your characters. Is not that I don't like them, is more like a matter of respect for you... It just don't feel good to "copy" other's characters.

you know dude, regardless of the reasons why you never really have to explain yourself as to why you fav something. If someone has a problem with you faving or not faving I think that speaks more about their problems then whatever problems they think you might have.

Personally I use the Favorites system to find other artists I find to be talented and watch them too. Chances are, if a person I watch is fav-ing the art, I might enjoy it too.

It's very understandable to show appreciation, however some cases for explinations are never found even for some people. Certain don;t mind/bother with the fact of why faving is established, especially when no words come after it. Why? Probably some illogical and perverted reason. Put Disrespectfull on the overkill words why don'tcha'. Art deserves more than to be looked at. XD; One day I do need to draw some of your characters. And it's like, the fuck? Just because I watch them doesn't mean I know them personally and am friends with them and in some conspiracy to be a dick to you, I just like their art. Jesus Christ. Shit, some of the people I'm watching -I- don't even like but I'm too lazy to delete them.

Or if someone watches you, and get butthurt because you're not watching them back and hound you for it. That's what I seem to get a lot. They either note me, or they used to be able to contact me via messenger...until i took that down..because of Them.

I dislike the people you start watching and they feel the need to start watching you.
I know someone I started watching because they draw really nice art and then they started watching me. I have a tendency to favorite their artwork whenever they post something really cute.You can look at my art. I'm terrible. I don't even ink my stuff. They favorite practically everything I post. It's actually kind of creepy because I really can't imagine they like it that much. I mean, some of it is like a alien with it's brains showing because I wanted to draw a zombie alien.

I like using my favorites to show what kind of personality I have. I favorite images that make me feel something. Whether it be inspiration or a nice bout of laughter. I dunno if you can feel laughter (other than physically) but whatever it makes sense to me.


I also favorite things just 'cause they're pretty or well done artistically so whatevs. S:

I tend to only favorite pics I really like. Whether it made me laugh or pulled at my heart strings somehow, I usually only do it in a situation like that.

I sometimes find myself shying away from user galleries who demand comments going alongside your +fav, regardless of how talented they are. I don't see the point in why you need a comment, the +fav is just as good.

I usually don't explain my faves I just swoop in fave&save and then swoop out again.

I do try and thank people for faving my work, except the people faving artwork I commissioned. I provide a link to the original picture and people still fave my page... Aah! >.<

Yeah a lot of people are really picky about commenting and saying why you faved it or what you liked about the art. Sometimes things just strike me and that's all.

I've seen some artists who feel the same way get a second FA account with a random user name to fav art they like. Ninja favs...

I never really bothered with the favs for the longest time myself. People seemed to have more pictures than I'd care to scroll through which means early favorites are rarely seen. It would be practical if FA implemented an optional shuffle on submission placement.

Personaly i dont like explaining why i fave something. Most likely i fave because the art/story/music was very well done and i realy liked it. I know i do have some in my faves that others might not like but oh well..i like em. When it comes down to someone faveing my art it always makes me smile to know that someone out there likes my work and actually encourages me to make more. But of course that's my opinion.

I understand what you meen. I was why about faving things before, but now I do it like crazy, anytime i see something I like at the moment or maybe i just like the art or style and not nessicarily the picture itself. And if anybody asks about anything, i just use the answer i gave my mum through highschool. "Cause its cool.." or if it sounds like they may be putting things down i just respond the same way i would to any stranger being agressivly rude. "FUCK you!"

I'd have to agree with the folk that say you don't need to explain why you fave'd something. In so e cases it just becomes obvious over time. For me most of mine show scifi or related stuff, others I like just be because.

i hate when people feel that i need to explain why i enjoy a piece. I dont favor it but rather i like it or find something interesting into it. WHo knows, maybe the FA will include a "like List" and an "okey " list... then eventually we get the "HAte List" XD

No, I didn't say that. Though I allowed it once. The commissioner paid me a little fee on top of paying the artist he wanted to commission. Other artists aren't going to directly profit from my creation without me getting a little taste.

Favourites are weird because you meet the odd artist who gets upset if you fav a work but not comment on it. I even read one artist blow out a full rant on how people who don't comment are lazy shits and shouldn't fav if they can't be assed commenting. But I always felt comments like 'this is nice' were redundant. Of course I think it's nice or whatever, it's why I faved it.

I met someone who discovered (I can't remember if it was this site or not) that if you block someone who faved your work, it unfaves it. They did this to anyone and everyone who faved without making a comment. ^-^

It's good honest and sound reasoning.

I find that fav's lets me see the artwork of others that I normally don't see, then allowing me to become a fan and watcher and fav. which allows others who watch or see my page find art that I like that they haven't seen before.

It also lets me see what kind of style and subject that the artist likes and finds interesting.

i usually fav stuff if i want to check it out again later, or if it's something i want to learn from art-wise. so i guess favs are kinda like "bookmarks" for me so i dont lose that piece of art

I'm glad to see it, I have found a LOT of very good artists by checking out people's art faved by artists I already watch.

Indifference is the way to go here, faves are a matter of appreciation for someones work, rather silly people would be so concerned over who faved what around the site

I prefer the ole fav and no comment. Don't really need to explain anything. If I like the image and effort put forth I fav. If someone needs self justification then that's on them. Sometimes I leave a comment but mostly leave it as it. I understand your idea behind not faving. And support 100%. I've thought of drawing some of your characters at points and I may just give it a shot. XD

I think that's a good policy for you. That way I can come to your page and see what you've found. I like your characters. I especially like those gay fox boys in one of the Huckle mary ann comics. Those guys were so cute.

I know what you mean....once or twice I get asked, and I just say 'Because I liked it' over and over again untill they get the message. But only if they moan. I'll explain once about how I just found it visually appealing or a delight to read and then repeat my basic message over and over again. Some replies I get are funny...

I can understand why you'd need to do this. It's probably really hard being a popular artist because then people over-react when you do... well anything. I mean, god forbid you draw someone's character because you thought it was cute or something. I'm sorry you had to honestly explain why you would fav something. Good luck and have fun.
