Digital Pads

I've been wanting a digital tablet I can digitally draw on for a while now. The wacom bamboo just isn't working for me--my brain just can't wrap around the concept of drawing and looking up at the screen.
For sheer simplicity's sake, I'm considering an iPad and a third-party stylus. It's portable, it has internet, and I can see what I'm drawing on. It's a little pricy, but less so than Wacom's stuff.
Any input/advice?
