ASK ME STUFF!!! http://formspring.me/shalepanther
So, I'l preface this by saying, I'm am too pupufur to read a 50MB html file, so I just got the short version of this whole.. thing.. I'm not putting my head in the middle of anything of the actual crime, but meerly my response to what
dragoneer said.
He was right...
Now, 'neer has been a tool to me for the last several years, as he rode the FA train to fame.. But, I'l say this. He was right. This fandom is... Not quite the community that many would like to think. We aren't all equals. It's a Fandom.. plain and simple.
That means 2 things. We do not police ourselves. If there is a felony type crime that takes place betixt two furs, it needs to be taken to the real life police. Not an admin on an art site. Is the US justice system broken in many ways, oh.. yeah.. Does rape leave victims in a really messed up mental state? Indeed... But 'neer ain't yo daddy. He's not just going to make all the bad people go away. You're an Adult.. Deal. If that kind of stuff happens, you tell the Police. Plain and simple.
But that's not really what I wanted to say. Because the second point is much more important to me. His statements about not posting anything on FA and drama and shit.. It's true. I watched some other rape related thing go down with a friend of a friend, and. 'neer was right. The offender was more popular, and was coddled and people defended him, and lashed out at the victim. I only saw One example of this. I'm sure as an admin, Dragoneer has seen a TON more of it... He wasn't so much saying. "Don't tell because it will cause drama" he was saying, Don't post it on FA and blast it around an art website, cause it won't have any positive effect on the situation. In fact, it may have caused her MORE mental anguish, as she got flamed and harassed. FA is a art site for an art fandom.. NOT a community. People come here, follow their favorite artists, and are Fans.. Fan=Fanatic.
Finally.. About the Admins being able to read everyone's notes.. Uhm.. . Hi, welcome to the internet. EVERYTHING you post on the internet can easily be seen by someone who is not inteded to see it. Your email provider has the power to see any mail that has ever come through thier servers, you ISP has the power to see everything you do. Your Internet privacy is as secure as the service admins not doing something.

and thank you.
There was a time not so long ago where those who ran email servers would consider it a serious breach of trust to read other people's emails. Emails are sacred. Just like letters sent through the post office. Just because one has the power to breach trust does not mean you should.
That's the big thing for me: trust. Do I trust a particular person to handle security in a mature manner? Quite a few places try to instill trust by saying that they will take reasonable precautions to protect your privacy and will break that privacy only through court order. EVERY sysadmin I know, and there's a bundle of them to know out here where I live, would consider it anathema to look through other people's email. It's dishonorable. It shames their profession.
Here, there is no issue of trust. I'll give them credit for one thing, At least they have the balls to say, 'Yeah, we read your private notes. There's nothing private about them at all.' In other words, they have no shame.
They should be even more up front about it and just call it 'notes' from now on, or 'semi-private notes' if they really want to be truthful.
And here, a central clearinghouse for furry art, and a gathering point for furry fandom as a whole, the admins can gather information about a small group of inter-related people. Reading private notes here gives the admins a LOT of power over the fandom by letting them gather all the collective private dirt the fandom has to offer.
If all this was done over gmail, lets say, our messages would e lost in the noise if some rogue sysadmin started reading people's emails. And I guarantee you that if such an employee was caught reading emails, they would be fired instantaneously. That is how a real company would operate.
but still, i guess there is that thing still.. I dont take internet privacy for granted.
Personally, i rarely note anyone, and when ever i do, its nothing really that secret and doesn't matter if anyone reads it or not. Though i'm sure other people have written some rather "interesting" notes, its the internet like you said.
I wonder if everyone knows that your internet provider and even the police can look at whatever your doing at anytime? All they need is probable cause reason, then their all into it.
But in either case, you're right. This is not a community, this is indeed a fandom. I really wish I could say otherwise but if you really think bout it, you can't. His ability to read everyone's notes,...well unless you're sending something majorly private, then I shouldn't be an issue, and on top of that, who the hell has the time to read the 100's o f thousands of notes sent every day. I doubt he bothers with it unless he needs to, to get the unbiased, true reality of who said what. in some kind of major problem revolving around the site. It wouldn't surprise me if "deleted" as in totally gone notes could be resurrected, for such purposes.
People need to get over it, we're using a only paper thin security to send information and communicate between people. Those who want to leave FA, it's not going to change anything or protect you any better, unless you unhook your compy from the net altogether.
