On the topic of Art at Furmeets
It has come to my attention that the meets lately are becoming more and more focused on the "Art" aspect of the fandom, and this seems to have changed the overall feel of the meets for some of our long time residents. and has also made some others feel like the meets are no longer the place for socialising, and more of a place for drooling over our resident artists work...
while I personally enjoy the company of artists at the meet, others feel that it detracts from the "warm" and "talkative" atmosphere the meets formerly had.
so I'm enforcing a new rule: no drawing at the meets, no showing off badges or pestering artists about commissions, there are other places to do that. sure there's no way to police this, but have some courtesy, man! not everyone at the meet is a boneriffically good artist. though exchanging any previous commissions is allowed (sometimes it's the best way to get things to the person)
as for the drawing, we have scheduled art meets for that*, every few months in York, Newcastle and Durham (it goes in a loop every few months or so)
we need to start acting like we're hanging out with friends, and not like we're at a convention, people!
sorry if this sounds too forceful, these are merely recommendatory.
*art meets will soon have a blog/fa page to follow.
Edit: By no means am I telling people to stop drawing or to stop bringing art to the meets, as people say, it certainly breaks the ice. this was more a note on the current state of things as points have been raised by various people at the meet. I'm merely suggsting for the place to look less like a dealers den and more like an actual social gathering.
honestly you guys, calm down, nothing's really changing, Just shedding a little light, y'no?

I can live with that~
If you're going to chastise artists, why not outright ban laptops. They're create a far more antisocial air than someone doodling does.
Next I expect you'll be banning laptops, I-pads and mobile phones.
The reason people are feeling outcast from groups is because now they have to make an effort to participate in group discussions, where as before they could just waltz up and be part into any discussion. And to be honest, artwork is an Icebreaker for some people. Drawing or observing.
GL enforcing this though, furs aren't known for taking things quietly
Its harder to talk to people in the current meet climate, groups are already there sometimes when before you could just waltz up and pester anyone :D
Once they've found someone they can talk and identify with their happy. But until then they "wall flower".
Meets would probably bee more interesting if everyone glompd the guys standing in the corners and made them central part of meets
Whoever actually runs the account though, take it from someone who's been going to meets a lot longer than you. Whatever happens at a meet, older folks will complain and say the atmosphere has changed. You get rid of artists, and it'll be blamed on it all being children. You get rid of the children and it'll be blamed on everyone now being into games. You get rid of the ga...
Basically, the crux of the matter is that the demographics of people at furmeets will always change. Some people move on to new things. Other people 'can haz founded a mate' and stop coming. Some people get jobs and find they no longer have the free time. Meanwhile, new people come in. And whenever the people involved change, a group of folks are always going to complain that things just aren't the same as they were in the good old daysand try and attribute blame to someone. This is something that was learned in Northernfurs a long time back and no amount of rules will address that, as its a complaint that stems from people not liking inevitable change, not from anything that's actually a curable problem.
to be honest though, trying to keep everyone happy always just upsets someone else in the long run, and I appreciate the room for debate we have here, this might just work as a subforum perhaps?
also: I've edited the OP at the end (mind you I was at NE bar at the time and the keyboards there stick like a bitch XD, sorry if i came off as being bossy)
ill be honest there is the small divide in the group but it was bound to happen. you got the artists, the shoppers, the drinkers, and the people who cram into the snug for werewolves x3 and i dont see the issue with it we all get along just fine and all be happy. everytime i am at a meet everyone is talking no one is exculded
if YOU have a problem with the meets, why dont you just leave instead of trying to throw everyone else out
You tell em Kiv'!
so in my opinion if you cant even show the balls to admit who you are and the reason you have the issue then you argument is invalid
and drawing is wat i like to do with other people even if i cant draw from time to time... i suppose tastes and opinions differentiate between people.
