Eh, it's not too bad. I've played it years ago, and pop on now and then to see what's changed. Unless you plan on "owning property," it's relatively cheap. A couple of bucks, and you got a decent avatar. The only prob is potential boredom. If you don't like nightclubs and music, it's harder to find entertainment. There are some RP areas, and I had fun with one in particular, but that one isn't around anymore.
For furry places to hang out, there's the GYC (Gay Yiffy Club), Club Rainbow Tiger, Yiff Factory, and bajillions of others. It depends on what you like, but they're generally easy to find with the search function.
I will warn you this though: Most there that call themselves furry are not furry. They're basically there for the sex, and are unable to type. Hell, some will rely on the animations than actually try to pose. I'd have to say the Tapestries muck is a better choice for that, overall.
Still, if you have a decent graphics card, SL is pretty. I had a lot of fun building stuff, and modifying my avatars. Thankfully most of them still function properly, though a few are way outdated now. Give it a try, just don't depend on free furry avatars. They're just creepy (last time I checked, anyways).
I am in SL since 2008 now and I have seen pretty much everything (nah kidding you cant see everything of SL). I run my own sci-fi rp group there and just recently joined a modern combat group, so there is always something to do and there are also lots of places that are outside of sexual RP, just depends on what you wanna RP.
And if you do not want to rp you can still chat, build, trade and sell or buy stuff or do whatever else you can imaging, That is the power of SL that you can create your won stuff if you want to.
I'm in Second Life since 2004, All I could say is, it's laggier than before, By Far, but doesn't mean you can't try it~
Also, you might find it annoying that you also might need to use real money to pay for SL money to buy Avatars or find a job there~

I just found the RP to be sub-par, and the obsession with sex-based RP to be the OMG MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER!
So if you want real roleplay, without it just being about sex? You're probably out of luck on SL.
Check out Luskwood.
