Con Report
Since more people watch me here, I figured I'd cross post...
FC was pretty wild this year. Nothing was quite as wild as the neutrally buoyant super Obama party from last year, but it was much more consistently 'on'. No lobby 'failcon' this time around. There were quite a few highlights this year, with a few minor snags and stresses here and there.
A couple of the stresses were the travel out to California in which I almost missed my flight. That was totally my fault for bad communication, but it turned out ok and I didn't even lose my bag. I managed to leave my keys at the Safeway self check out, but thankfully they were found and not stolen, and I figured it out that same day. Getting my panel ready was a last minute stress ball, but it did also turn out to be pretty good. Post FC hangout plans were my biggest issue, but even that resolved itself by the time it rolled around. There were also some down moments here and there as I floated from one activity to the next, It seemed that at least once per day/night there was about half an hour or so when I found myself wandering around alone and depressed looking for people. In a way, unless you are always hanging out with the same people for the entire length of the con, I think that's inevitable (the wandering aimlessly, not so much the depression, that's my personal hangup). Fortunately I did always manage to find people after a bit, and from there things looked up.
As for highlights? Well, just about everything else. It was a blast to see everyone again, both the west-coasters that only make it to FC, as well as my usual hangout crew that I seem to see at every con. There were some people I didn't get to see enough in the con whirlwind, like Kit Silver, MammaLlamaDevil, SueDeer, and Vince. It's amazing how little I see Vince considering he was a roomie. The Unsheathed live podcast was amazing, and I can't wait to hear it again. The special guest Dick Power was hilarious, and I'm curious as to what the mics picked up and what they didn't. My auxiliary wine bitch may have been a bit more than necessary, especially after drinking at dinner. Hopefully KM handled it better than I did. ;) Working the Fur Planet table with Fuzz, Tieran, Zia and others was neat, and it was cool to sell out of just about EVERYTHING. The parties were great, and dinner with Arthur Husky was... well, let's just say special. He was rip-roaring drunk at 7 on Saturday, and I think he was cosplaying a Dr. Who... at least that's my impression from the bow-tie. He decided that I was Rory, some Dr. Who character, and I was a little freaked out by the boisterousness. He did explain, loudly and with examples, that in California it is apparently normal to be loud and obnoxious in public. (Confirmation was received the next day at lunch at Flames) After my second beer (we were at Gordon Biersch) I began to relax and get more into the spirit of things, and Zimmy Cookie was nice to talk to.
My quest to find someone to act out my K-9 sketch with me was a big failure, and resulted in a crazy drunk text that I totally didn't remember sending, and probably never would have known about had the recipient not talked to me about it later. (And if you don't already know about it, you never ever ever will. ;) )
I did go to parties on Saturday and Sunday nights, but never drank too much at any of them. The memory of last year's monday was fresh enough to keep me in line. ;) I know I said I didn't remember the drunk text, but I wasn't that drunk, just a bit drunk and sleepy as all get out. I wasn't hung over the next morning.
My panels went well, the small press panel with Fuzz and my own panel with the Roar 3 preview reading. I announced the theme for Roar 4 submissions, Celebrity.
After the con, I spent Tuesday morning doing a bit of back and forth with the Gneech about the Fairmont charging us for an extra day even though we were all out of the room, and the morning at the Tech museum. I was slightly disappointed because it seemed to be aimed at a much much younger audience, but then ran off to lunch and hangout times with Rikoshi and Kyell Gold. Had a lovely Japanese dinner that night by myself, then flew home the next day.
