I was on the periphery of Goth a long while ago. And, for some reason, I got called Emo a few times, even when I wasn't trying to be. It never made sense.

But as far as I can tell: Goths might have an appreciation for classical literature (Primarily Byron, Poe, perhaps both Shelleys, Bradbury in his darker turns) and will have a dark motif for its own sake, with skulls and such. But the line is very hazy and I can't say more without just sort of guessing.

Some goths are mistaken for ravers if they wear a few bright colors, too.

I've had a few people call me emo simply because I was depressed at those times, and I've always heard people call some depressed people "emos", regardless of what group they were part of...so I always assumed emo was just a slang term for a depressed person. If that's the case, then I guess I'm one then
I do know that emos and goths aren't the same though! A major mix up people have there

The emo "scene" bases their music on emotional lyrics and tone to music. actualy in the old days they were more or less grunge. Modern emo (read mainstream trend whores) focus on a combination that I could only describe as hipster with more black and no beard. not to mention the emo "scene" seems to have shifted to angsty music and lyrics that is just whining into a microphone.

So when someone calls you emo, means your being whiney and or somber/depressed/angsty.

I think the mistake is made because both groups tend to wear dark colors and seem kind of reclusive at times(at least from what I've seen). One amusing distinction my friend said was: Goths like to give cuts, Emos like to be cut. :P

Knowticed and noticed... there is a difference. One is a word, one is not.

1: Thank you for correcting my spelling but the spellcheck did not tell me it was wrong and I didn't bother to care so much about it at the time. I will look into this.

2: what the fuck? This a habit of yours? Pointing out mistakes without adding anything to the topic? Sit the fuck down and don't speak please. It is distracting.

Actually, it is a habit of mine. :] Just fixing common mistakes that I have pet peeves about. Your / you're is one of my favorites, as is there / their / they're.

And as for sitting the fuck down and not speaking, no, I think not. I am making the world better, one correction at a time. Who knows, I may have saved you a job in the future as your resume will no longer be thrown into the garbage bin because of a mistake you didn't knowtice! :D

The final draft of my resume is much different from my sloppy uncaring comments and the like on FA among people that have really, very little basis on my life.

However if you wish to make corrections in peoples spelling and or grammar, I suggest doing it more tactfully. Right now you simply come off as, well, a loser. Coming in and briskly telling people "Your wrong! do it this way!" Marks you as socially inept, as you are not able to relate a suggestion to people without being insulting, which in turn makes me not want to take up your suggestion and defeating your goal of "making the world a better place."

Think how to present your suggestions before doing so. Grammar and spelling, though important, do not require an insulting manner to be given.

*agreenod* There is a big difference, though I can't remember what it is, heh. Actually, several differences, but people tend to misinterpret what it means to be goth, or see others doing it, and just follow along.

hey jus came upon this randomly. sorry if my response is a tad more than annoying. well i have to agree with you on your journal. ive had my own fair share of rants. worst thing about this is is that with today society they hardly see the difference anymore of the gothic culture (and sub cultures) and "emo". people think jus becuz your having a bad day an your somehow expressing it they call you emo. they think jus becuz someone where all black that their "emo" or goth. people are too ignorant anymore. and we can only do so much to try an correct them. i mean theirs beautiful gothic based jewely thats labeled "emo" wtf?

Thats because being ignorant and an idiot is trendy. More so than other eras.

People don't' want to bother knowing whats right, they just want what makes their own comfort zones placated.
