Why are people so stupid? I mean, I know that's a vague question, but seriously? If I could ask some higher power just one question... it would be why people have all this potential and yet they waste it, sitting on the internet, being purposefully 100% tactless, ignorant and insulting?
Of course I speak of the kinds of comments I get here, on YouTube, and anywhere else I post information, photos or videos of my pets. I tend to post these things in places that aren't insect-specific, most of the time, so in a sense, I should probably anticipate a lot of ignorant, rude comments such as "OMG STEP ON IT". But am I so wrong for expecting just a liiiittle bit more from grown human beings?
"OMG WHY HAVEN'T YOU SPRAYED THEM WITH RAID YET."
Uh, let's see. I posted this video of my pets, with a description that uses as few big-person words as possible and in as short of sentences as possible in the hopes that it will be easier for underachieving 5th graders to understand, let alone, say, a 27 year old male with their YouTube favorites filled with things such as military videos and hunting shit, hell even a hardcore camo background adorns their userpage. I post this video stating their latin name and other information of which only a hobbyist or admirer of insects would bother educating themselves about. Let's see, maybe I haven't sprayed them with Raid because I LIKE them?
By the way, a teenager left this comment on my hissing roach birth video, and it got 9 thumbs up. :/ I stopped approving most comments like these because as we all know, internet bullies work in groups, and if they see one person being mean, they're more inclined to follow.
"You're only keeping those things to be shocking!!!"
I remember back when rats were "shocking" pets to keep, now they're as common as puppies or hamsters and people (thankfully) are beginning to embrace the idea that, hey, rats DO make awesome pets! Last I checked, people still keep them even though they're no longer shocking, likely because you know... people LIKE them?
"Only a psychopath would keep cockroaches in their home/find cockroaches fascinating."
I got this type of comment recently from some guy with "muslimpower" in his name and loads of videos of violence and shocking imagery in his favorites. I'm thinking this person should at least comprehend how terrible, shocking and disgusting the world can be, and that a video of a mother cockroach giving birth is by far the least of the world's worries?
"You are the most disgusting woman ever." / "I can't believe you're a girl and handling filthy bugs"
I get these all the time on YouTube especially (of course), I just don't approve them. It really HURTS, you know? It makes me wonder, if I were a male, would I get comments like these? I've also gotten comments on the opposite end of the spectrum; people wanting me to put my roaches in my mouth or stomp on them with high heels on :| Newsflash; I'm not doing this for shock value NOR as fetish fuel for people who like to see animals get murdered for sexual pleasure. Urgh. To me that's far more disgusting than a girl simply HANDLING an insect.
My pets are clean. I don't get roaches from dumpsters or even outside my house without giving them a period of a couple days in solitary to clean themselves off. No matter what kind of filth is on a roach, they will clean it off themselves and the germs will be gone, and if they have pesticide on them, they'll either die or there won't be enough to kill them. After I know they're clean, I let them into the rest of my colony. Most of my roaches are wild-caught these days, as several species I used to have are no longer legal in the state I live in now. I mainly keep the ones that I can find in the wild now; skunk roaches, banana roaches, surinam and a few others.
You can call me disgusting, but chances are, I know the biology and "dangers" of these insects far better than you. I've spent years handling roaches, letting them crawl on me, even kissing their little pronotums and digging around in their dirt when it was cage-cleaning time. If there were any risk of them being diseased or dirty or harmful in any way to humans, I'd have gotten sick by now, but I have not. Human beings used to live symbiotically with cockroaches and all insects. They were our handy little cleaners and we were thankful for them. In Europe, it was even customary to release roaches into new dwellings. I hate the way the world has become. A place where insects aren't welcome in human society makes me feel just as unwelcome for keeping them and loving them and respecting them.

but just remember, there will always be stupid people. if the comment bothers your, delete or hide it. Don't stress yourself by what OTHER PEOPLE think. To me you're a really inspiring person. just keep doing what you're doing, because you're amazing the way you are. And I'm not just talking out of my ass.
Fuck the haters and life your life the way you want. have a passion and keep the pets that make YOU happy. Just because others don't like them, doesn't mean YOU have to.
"Just because you have an opinion, doesn't always give you the right to SAY it."
Sure, they can have opinions. No one will deny you that. But if you make yourself look like an ass, or when it's NOT NEEDED, shut your mouth. Just. Shut your mouth and never open it again. People can be tactless and cruel :/ Why be an asshole. Why. How would THEY feel if you came along their page and was like "OHHH MILITARY STUFF SUCKS. DON'T YOU KNOW OUR COUNTRY IS DYING?? YOURE STUPID FOR LIKING THIS STUFF!"
People. I shall never understand them :I
I to this day, while I guess I can sort of understand the fear some have of insects (I blame media and loooong ass passed down fears that have lost value though). But I don’t understand the fact that even if you are cowardly enough to be scared of something that is 1000x, smaller, probably cleaner and allot more defenceless than you...why must you try and belittle others who happen to like them. Its like someone who hates dogs throwing obscenities because you do.
I have allot of respect for your collection, and I love the photos and vids you post so keep em coming and continue to squick the weakhearts ;D. Mother nature is all around, just cause you raid the crap out of your home doesn’t mean you wont meet them eventually mahwaa.
Insects have been on this planet much much longer than we have and humans should respect that, we're invading them, not the other way around. But you and other insect lovers like you are sure to change all that in time, and I truely hope that insects get the good name they deserve.
Keep it up Vera, you're awesome. c:
I think the part that upsets me the most is knowing that these people will go out of their way to kill an animal that poses absolutely NO threat to them, just because they don't like it/are afraid of it. And I've heard it many times, "I kill them on sight.", "The only good _____ is a dead _____.", etc. That makes me rage.
Human beings used to live symbiotically with cockroaches and all insects. They were our handy little cleaners and we were thankful for them.
Nicer days. I look forward to having a house soon so I can have all the buggies I've been wanting but have been unable to get because of roommates forbidding them.
I also own reptiles and amphibians. I hate getting comments like that on my babies. Saying their creepy and slimy and disgusting... My mom does not understand my love for them and says they are filthy, disgusting, unpersonable(when each one has their own awesome personality) creatures to my face.
I completely understand the hurt there... x-x
I love pill bugs(aka rollie pollies :3), caterpillars, ants, beetles, moths...ect ect. On the playground in younger grades, I would sit an play with big black ants or rollie pollies. (Never the bright red ones) And kids would say I'm weird or crazy. Of course, that's a compliment to me.
We just gotta get over the fact that most people are stupid and resent "different". I embrace being unique and always will. If I like something, it doesn't matter if no one else does oer not.
I mean I know you want feedback to find other bug-lovers, but wouldn't it be better to just avoid that where most of the stupid are?
But to each their own!
If people made sense / used tolerant intelligent common sense, we wouldn't have half the problems in the world we have nowadays, now would we? The Internet really is hard to take seriously alot of time, based on how folks treat it like they can get away with anything under 'anonymity', which is of course, false.
it comes down to the "getting away" part, because no one can do anything to them over an internet connection sitting in front of a computer... it is sad as they are just trying to shoot their rage in the wrong direction. It is also sad they forget the principles of freedom... yes, we have freedom of speech, but that's no reason to have it at other's expense or to make fun of.
The thought of seeing them sitting and doing nothing their whole lives but complaining is my way to see it... it works, makes me feel better I've achieved a lot more as a human being than them.
Everyone is brave behind a computer screen
Then, of course, I take careful aim and politely slap the jerkface down with some well-chosen and informative words, because this is the Internet and I'm not just talking to the person who is insisting that widow spiders kill hundreds of people a day, I'm talking to whatever happens along, reads our conversation, and mentally picks a side.
"Keep fighting the good fight," basically, is what I mean to say.
But really the best thing to do is just ignore the morons, of course. That's a given :P Keep doing what you're doing, fuck 'em all! You love your roaches and you want to share them with the world. That's all that matters :)
I'd just ignore them and be happy with what and who you are. You are pretty amazing all gross things aside. :P People shouldn't trample on things that they do not understand and yet they do and maybe some people are jealous cos they can't be as amazing and as wonderfully talanted.
Just my three cents! I'll shut up now :P
(Oh and I know this journal is past a month but still, hate mail never goes on hold... sadly...)
What amuses me though is the sheer ignorance of people. The majority of folk who tell you to spray them with raid and such are likely not bothered by insects at all it's just a natural eww reaction and they would probably go around squashing them without bothering about it at all. then there is people like me. I have a legitimate reason for wanting all the insects on the earth to be destroyed. I have severe Insectophobia/Entomophobia I am scared shitless by insects. When I see them I get heart palpitations, can't breath, feel dizzy and think I'm about to die as well as a severe flight response which has one more than one occasion led me to forget to open the door when I run out the room lo even butterflies come near me and I break down in tears but even though all of this I still feel bad when someone crushes a bug because when it comes down to it they are amazing and fascinating animals with such a huge diversity of shapes, sizes, colour, species, behaviours and abilities
Keep up the hobby and just ignore all the haters they are ignorant insecure people just out to waste your time
But we also get native cockroaches, which are just beautiful, I really do enjoy seeing them on the rare occasions I find them wandering the house. They're more like big bugs and I would happily keep them as pets. I had a look at the roaches in your gallery and they are equally as beautiful. Also strangely fascinating. So I'm not against cockroaches at all, unless they are german cockroaches lol :)
Where do you live? What kind of native roaches? :o
I live in Australia. I'm not sure if our native cockroach is really a cockroach, but that's what they're known as. They're very clean creatures from what I've heard, I'd definitely keep one as a pet :)
Since you seem to be quite knowledgable on the subject of cockroaches, have you ever seen an albino one? I kept finding these weird white cockroaches at my old house o_O I also found a white millipede at my new house which was cool, I've only ever seen brown ones :)
