Well, its time for another rant fest from me, bigshow. I kinda think this might come out to all who watch dubbed animes out there, and I know it probably pissed you off too, I know it does to me though.
Its when the company or whatever, changes the fuckin voice actors whenever a new season start, although they keep the main character's voice, everybody elses either change pitch or change al together. What a loud of fuck shit! Case in point, when I just got back here, I was thinking, "hey Im gonna watch me some One Piece tonight". I get in the house, stop the VCR from recording, rewind the tape to the end of naruto, and then hit the record button. I noticed, it was comming on differently, like one of those season change deals. And I was like, "cool, new season". But then, all of a sudden, I started to hear to butchered horror fest that was the voice change, the very same shit I have been exposed to when I waited soo fucking long to see those new episodes of DBZ then I was in Jr High, then when they finally came out, I was like, WTF!! Why did they change the voices, like nobody gonna know! I mean, specially when the accent change is as clear as fuckin day, it makes you not want to watch it. I mean, your use to listening to how they originally sounded, but then out of the blue, they change shit on you, and youre wondering what the fuck is wrong with there voices. its a shit load of fuck is what it is. And dont think those home grown cartoons arent emune to the voice switcharoo neither. They are even worse when thye do that shit, it makes a cartoon sound horrible, and more eritating. Im just tired of hearding those weird ass voices everytime they change the anime or cartoon voice actors, like they couldnt find noone that sounded like the original voice actor, to make it sound like nothing new, like ive seen in some anime and cartoons, but no, why just hand pick someone for the job and make the cartoon sound awfull
Whats even worse then that, is when they change there art styles and cartoon looks, making the characters look deformed or just plain weird from what they originally looked. They did this shit to *oh god im about to say it* American dragon, and it when from good enough *to where id watch it from time to time* to fuck that shit it sucks donkey ball sac horrible!! I never watched that shit after that, and to boot, there characters voices sounded ive more annouying that last time, WHAT WHERE THEY FUCKING THINKING!!?? Is sickning to watched that happen, they think kids like wack looking character, but damnit its not cool, its sucks, and it makes it seem like the creators or lazy, cheap and untalented, like a 3 year old could have done better, i mean, just look at most of the cartoons now, most of them, at least to me, are trying to copy that Hanna Barbere style, which, now, is just discracing them rather than honoring them, cuz I mean, they probably didnt want there names linked to crappy ass shit like what they're spewing out there asshole right now. Its a discrace to cartoons, its a discrace to them, and t fucking sickning

FA+

For Japanese subs, I only watched those episodes because they were ahead of the anime. Then I got the manga which is even farther than the anime, so...hehe. ^.^
So, yeah, I agree with you. Nor do I force anyone to watch an anime with subtitles.
Anyways, 4Kids, the previous owners of the license to One Piece lost the rights to the series due to their total failure at making it a success in the US. Series owner Toei, knowing that there had to be a market for the show here, sold it over to Funimation, who previously made a ton of money for them with Dragonball Z and did not have the ire of the entire anime community for the various changes 4Kids had brought to One Piece.
The version you saw tonight was the first episode of Funimation's takeover of the series, with a cast that's more in line with the original version and no mass editing and eliminating huge swaths of episodes to speed up things. Also, the dumped all the really bad accents and stuff since those were made up by 4Kids and had nothing to do with the show. Most people really hated them to begin with, so they really won't be missed.
unlike DBZ the one Peace cast change was tooo noticable, lol
I agree, but alas, there's not much we can do to change the next younger generation's tastes. i don't know where they're getting their statistics from.
4Kids' dubbing of the show is extremely poor. The way they attempt to dumb down the script for the kids, how they mask several realistic things they will eventually have to be made aware of like guns or death (emphasis on death), even going as far as to turn a character with dark skin (a rarity in most Anime) and recolor him white (as a black guy myself, I did NOT appreciate that at all). I don't know much about it, since I'm not into One Piece, but several key storyarcs, plenty that served to develop characters further, were skipped over because of content. I understand that edits had to be made on Toonami, but 4Kids just picked the wrong show to adapt into English. Trying to "kiddify" the show that just wasn't meant for children on our shores was a complete and utter mistake. To me, there wasn't all that much consistency to begin with because 4Kids fucked it up from the start.
But, I can side with your beef with inconsistency. I'm over it now, but the cast change in the Sonic video games to 4Kids' cast from their (once-again) bastardized dub of Sonic X had me miffed, too. SEGA just HAD to think of that idea because only ONE voice actor died (RIP Deem Bristow a.k.a. Eggman) and instead of recasting that one role, they made the decision to fire the Sonic game cast to use the 4Kids cast. It's a pretty weird situation, being that this inconsistent change in actors made the show and the game consistent BECAUSE of acting. Still, I don't particularly care for it, though to be fair, at least the 4Kids cast does a better job in acting for the games than they did for the TV show for the most part. At the time, Dragonball Z's change in actors had me furious, too; but the cast has gotten extremely better over the years and, ironically, the Ocean Group dub, especially when they did their own dub of it for Canada, only got worse. :p
And for the record, you may have not seen the change in actors coming, but MANY others, especially the One Piece fanbase, did. You say "if the dynamic works, don't mess with it." Well, 4Kids' handling of the show REALLY, HONESTLY, AND OBVIOUSLY wasn't working.
I can't comment on your rant about animation (though I WAS kinda put off by American Dragon's animation change), but in most of the anime I watch and thoroughly enjoy, updates in animation are a welcome, fresh change.
Anyway, that's my opinion; not much of a conclusion, but here it is. 4Kids fucked up, and FUNImation's attempting to make it better. In this case, it should be a good thing. Sorry if you don't see it that way; but we're only human.
*looks around FA*
So to speak...
and the other think i was refering to, is when they make BAD choices, like the ones that make ratings go down, and make the character look like crap. If it changes and makes them look amazinly awsome, then thats a good change. Sorry if i wasnt being direct or indirect with my statements
As for them keeping the actors and just lay off the extreme editing job, I never known 4Kids to do that, not to mention that it would probably make their screw-up all the more conspicuous. Then, there's FUNImation just having the rights to the show and just keep the 4Kids cast. I think it would be difficult because of the working distance in between the two groups. 4Kids actors would have to move back and forth for dubbing while having prior commitment to 4Kids in general in the same time. And this is for a TV show that isn't even over in Japan yet with no end in sight, so it would be a continuous cycle of travel expense. So, FUNImation probably went for the money-saving decision to use their own in-house actors to continue from where 4Kids left off. Well, that's my guess. I don't quite know how everything works; the two companies probably aren't that far away from each other, though I doubt it.
Anyway, 4Kids just better stick with to shows like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. For those shows, they are not just stand-alone TV shows that entertain; they also serve as an advertisement for the respective trend the shows represent in real life. Pokemon has its video games, and Yu-Gi-Oh has the card game; 4Kids can do fine on shows like that, especially since those shows are so particularly juvenile that little change and editing had to be made (except Yu-Gi-Oh, but that obviously doesn't matter). And while their English dub of Sonic X sucks, because Sonic appeals to children most of all, I imagine Sonic X did decently as far as ratings are concerned, and it also promotes the video games, where Sonic is mainstream. One Piece isn't like those shows at all.
I hate those bastards.
And the voice change when that happened, well I hear that 4Kids put a no compete clause in their VA's contract so even if the same actors wanted to they aren't allowed to work for another company at the same time.
The way those work they can barely even do a voice in the church puppet show without a lawyer showing up.
Once you've been watching for a bit, you don't notice that you're reading the lines, and the flicks of your eyes are fast enough that you don't miss a thing[1]. Yes, it does take a bit of practice, but most people get the knack within a few viewing hours at most, (I've seen a lot of people reach that point from a dead start with just a single showing at an anime club).
Now, there are some people who will never get the knack and it is possible that you are one of them. If so, I feel sorry that you are stuck with the generally lousy voice actors used to dub most animes, (no offense to those doing the dubbing, but they simply don't have access to first string voice talent, or most of the second string for that matter).
[1] Well, unless you're trying to do things like follow both the Japanese and English subtitles for a song, but that is only commonly done with the theme songs.
So nobody bothers hiring good actors. Or giving a damn about continuity.
It's just Product.
Meanwhile, stuff made domestically has to go through so many risk-adverse executives that everything turns bland and generic, except for the occasional very rare show that manages to avoid executives second-guessng it. I worked on a pilot once: the original show premise was 'lots of funny beatings, like an old Popeye cartoon, in a spaghetti-western setting'. By the time it got to the stage where I was involved it turned into a little show about the value of family togetherness. If it'd gone through another round of development the lead character probably would've ended up being in school.
if anything good gets through all this, it's usually an accident.
