You do not have to deal with debt collectors legally. In fact you can send them what is called a "Cease and desist" letter. In it you state that they are to cease and desist any and all attempts at collecting any amount of money from you otherwise you will have to take legal action. And you inform them that you do not have to deal with collection agencies and only have to deal with the original debtor.
They should stop calling and bugging you.
This all true, found a book on the subject years ago. This should help you.

Don't have to harass you before you can send the letter.
and even if you pay the money to the collection agency it is not guaranteed to get to the company you actually owe money to. so you could end up having to pay alot more than you actually owe.
