About My Colorings...
14 years ago
For some reason I can't explain, it seems that the point in time I have the most motivation to do a coloring, is when there is some level of surprise involved. I like doing a whole coloring for artists or people, and then showing them the finished product, sort of like a present all wrapped up and ready.
However, when I ask in advance, or am asked to do one by someone else, my morale just drops through the floor. It's not that I don't want to do these colorings, it's that I have much less drive to focus on them. They get pushed aside, even if they're for friends, or have high priority.
This mindset gets me in a bit of trouble, too, because I have a few images that I've worked on, that will never see the light of day. Namely, because the artists either don't like other people coloring their stuff (financial reasons or otherwise), or are upset because I didn't ask in advance.
The latter boggles my mind, though. How is it bothersome, that an individual who thinks highly of your skill, spends a chunk of time in attempt to improve the quality of your piece, in order to pleasantly surprise you? I don't post without permission, anymore, and I more or less only show the completed colorings to the artists for approval.
Why is it some kind of affront that I didn't ask in advance? There are no legal reasons not to, as under the terms of fair use, I can color whatever I like as long as I make no money off of it. I don't post it, thereby meaning that I don't disregard the artists in order to bolster some level of inane popularity. So why? Why is it that 2-6 hours of work, which is essentially the physical manifestation of a giant compliment, seen as offensive or thoughtless?

Some people have forgot what is it to other people to see your art.
Anyways. Some people aren't just in their days so sometimes they don't expect a surprise like that, I would be so grateful~ But some other might not be that positive.
Don't let yourself get sad because of those reactions! I'm sure your intentions were great!
Some people only see the actions and sometimes are over defensive.
So hope everything comes out well sir. Keep up your great coloring~!
And then when it is done, theres this little "oh squeee!" moment, because i can finally do the colouring and shading and that's the most fun of all!
.....but because its so much fun, it gets done so fast that it almost passes me by ^^;
If a pic is labelled as a WIP, I don't touch it.
Nonono. You're fine, I promise. You have absolutely nothing to do with this journal. You two were the kinds of people who were pleasantly surprised, which makes me very happy. I'm referring to the types of people who I show my colorings to, and they are put-off by the gesture.
I keep considering scrapping the project.
I never announce who I'm going to pick, and some people get pissed.
Hey, I support you. Anyone who's interested in making more of this community is OK in my book.
And aiming at the first two posts here, one, each individuals character is theirs and theirs alone, perhaps they don't want others using it, it's entirely their decision, don't bash their choice not to let others draw them. And the second post about not posting if you don't want others to use it and post it? No. Art is the intellectual property of the artist and should not be used without the artists permission. If you want to appropriate it, that's sketchy legal ground, but as a general legal rule the new work must be at least 30% different, and even then it's sketchy. But to just wantonly repost another artists efforts is quite frankly, plagiarism.
Of course, it doesn't help that FA considers colorists to not be artists. You'd be hard pressed to find Neer watching a colorist, for example.
I know my art is terribad as is, but at least I hope it helps a bit... or counts for something... >.<;;
