Thank you to everyone who has joined so far! We're still a very new group but we're growing slowly, so let's get to know each other a bit by commenting with your favorite silent films!
For me it's a bit hard to choose just one favorite, but overall I would have to say it's "Metropolis". It's a wonderful film and has had a lasting effect on Sci-Fi films even to this day. The complete restored edition that came out last year makes it even more enjoyable!

However, if I must choose one favourite, I think I'll have to say The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. German as well, delightfully eerie and the visuals... ah.
Any of the films done by Buster Keaton, as well as any films that the film companies had consulted Buster for their comedic routines (its spans widely from Red Skelton films to Lucille Ball). As far as I'm concerned, anything that Buster touched was pure gold, even when MGM was trying to destroy his career, he still managed to put in as many gems as he could into every film.
Other favorites include Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy (together and separately), Beatrice Lillie's "Exit Smiling," and Fatty Arbuckle (of course!) with Buster and Al St. John.
I used to love Harold Lloyd's films, he was wonderful, but then his first talkie called "Welcome Danger" came out and his rude and pompous ways obliterated any love I had for the silent character. My favorite of his films used to be "The Freshman" but I can't go back to it now.
