The other day my and my friends finally were together on a day with good weather so we went out to a local "mountain" (its a just steep hill) that was supposed to have geodes. When we got to the spot we found a steep cliff made of thin layers of shale. This stuff is in layers as think and strong as a hard taco shell.
My friend that does know about rocks informed was not the type of rock you can find geodes in.and geology told that iron can collect in this type of rock formation and form large spheres. As we walked along the cliff face you could see spots where a sphere once was.
We found a spot where a column of shale had moved fair enough from the cliff face that a small cave tunnel had formed. Yes we were stupid and walked through it. There were a lot of formations and water cut channels coming down the cliff face.
At one point when my friend was stary_traveler was picking at something on the cliff face I saw something move. I looked kind of like some one had poured a bucket of water. it was a small land slide we told her to press against the cliff. If any thing came down it would have missed her. Nothing really came down to our level just a few pieces the size of US quarters. It fun to watch. We found it was caused by just the wind.
We did find some nice pieces of pyrite alone that creek bed. When we were just leaving the cliff Stary spotted a concretion in the cliff face. It was not far from the tunnel entrance which is why we missed it the first time. It was larger then a bowling ball and had a straight crack going down the middle. She had found a large iron butt.
There are photos that I can uplod if any one wants to see.
