I can relate. I've been in two of these myself -- once from the front while getting out of the car, the other from behind on a highway offramp. The front-ender was the more dangerous of the two. I could've had my whole knee destroyed. I never did find out who either driver was.

My sister also got into a head-on collision with a drunk driver. She was driving a Subaru Forester, the drunk was in a GMC SUV. The GMC was totaled (snapped the whole drivetrain), so the guy ran into the woods on foot. My sister was fine and the car was, amazingly, repairable. The good news is, the guy was driving a company vehicle and was easily identified, so he got sent to jail. It was, sadly, just one of his multiple offenses, and had already been involved in another hit-and-run the previous day!

Can't we deport these people to Antarctica or something?

I hope that intersection has one of those cameras that many have now to catch people who run red lights, if so maybe it got the plate number or someone else with a phone camera managed to even with the moment being so hectic. I hope you haven't taken more than a scare and that they can catch and jail them soon (thankfully if the driver was the owner or related to the owner such an expensive vehicle with such extensive and expensive damage shouldn't be too hard to track down when taken in for repair).

Well, when they were making their getaway, we DID chase them until we hit a red light and didn't want to chance following them even though they tore through it. I'm honestly surprised they didn't hit anyone else from where we could see it happen, or that they didn't tip over. When they disappeared, the road they were taking bends in a serious sharp S curve, so who knows what happened after I lost visibility of them. But the people he almost ran off the road stopped.

A partial's good though, the odds of more than one expensive vehicle matching even a partial have to be extremely against it happening, and will narrow the search for the culprit considerably. Depending on how much work they put into their job given the knowledge of the make and model of the vehicle will allow for tracking parts sales for the repairs it'll have to have (since driving it damaged would just increase the chance of being caught), and unless they've a lot of money they aren't going to quietly ship it off to a junk yard for crushing to cover up the crime (although I suppose it's not impossible).

Sounds like the response my parents got when the house was broken into and robbed about 10 years ago. Even with a handgun stolen the response was that it wasn't worth the time to investigate or even come to the house to look for prints (had rained and a quick response could have gotten at least shoe prints and fingerprints) because someone had abandoned a boat carrier alongside the road. Gee, boat carrier or stolen handgun, would never have thought the boat thing was more of a worry than something that can be used to kill someone. No wonder more and more people feel the police might as well be eliminated and everyone armed with that kind of 'helpfulness'.

DANG! I wrote you this huge comment and then the DNS thing messed up. To recap, I'm very sorry to hear about what happened to your friend, even if they got financial compensation, nothing compensates for the pain, physical damage, and temporary disability.

The sad thing is though that not only was that illegal probably not deported, the US is showing a viciously horrifying trend of not punishing illegals for the crimes they're caught for, in ADDITION to not being punished for being illegal. I can link you to news articles of illegals caught for rape, murder, abuse, theft, etc, who aren't even punished for those crimes. It's..yeah.

You shouldn't have to wait for any papers, if you have car insurance beyond simple liability you should be able to go in and get checked out and have it billed to your car insurance. I would call the doctor's office ahead of time to make sure they can do it, but that's the process I went through when I was in my accident last year.
