Okay, so, why do so many people hate Nickelback?
I actually really like the band Nickelback, and a few months ago my boyfriend told me he hated them. I asked him why, and he said they were "unoriginal". He showed me a youtube clip of "someday" and "how you remind me" playing at the same time, and I agree, they are basically the same song.
But, I mean... Why do people hate them? AC/DC copies their own songs, and they have far less people hating them.
Is it more than copying their own songs? The lead singer being a douche? I've been looking on the internet and I'm basically stumped.
So basically what I'm asking for is why all the hate for such a random band? I have to know!

So I'm pretty convinced it has to be more then people jumping on a bandwagon, hating a band so hard because they're unoriginal seems.. well, kind of odd.
i mean that gives you your unique edge, it makes a song definitely "nickleback
Those two songs are the bomb! I love Savin' me <3
I'm sorry if you're not a sister ):

I can understand people have their own likes and dislikes when it comes to music, I just don't know why SO many people don't like them?
Personally they just have far too much of a mainstream sound to them, I enjoy progressive metal and fantasy style, and industrial.
Also, lung cancer voice man.
I mean, Nickelback can in no way be the only band who does that. Other bands do the same thing, and even steal tunes from other artists, but Nickelback seems to be the most hated band since Creed (and Creed is definitely that, but I mean, creed is number 82 in the U.S' most popular artists), and Nickelback is one of the most popular rock bands out right now, so they can't be -complete- shit if they're rolling in millions.
Also, I don't think his voice is too bad. But, everyone has their tastes, obviously!
The issue is not them copying other people, it's constantly doing the same thing over and over and being EXTREMELY popular for what seems like little to no effort on their part.
Take Kamelot, where their first albums sounded very mediocre and a lot of the songs were ok but to me were't very enjoyable. Go to now, and the style is HIGHLY improved, and they're highly recognized for their constant shifting and improving on what they do.
The problem is they wrote a good song. Then another that sounded similar. Then another. Then another.. And no matter what, the masses loved it. Popular doesn't necessarily mean good or skilled. I mean, the most popular girl in my elementary school was just an over spoiled brat who treated anyone like shit if they weren't wearing Abercrombie and Fitch clothes 24/7. As opposed to kids like me who had minimal friends, but strong bonds and people who liked us for our own individuality rather than for being popular and to look cool.
They are hated because they got that fame but did nothing to really change or improve, I havn't heard them try anything new, or take any leaps. Even Linkin Park jumped out of their norm to release an album that wasn't as well accepted by most of their fans, but it's an album that grows on people and tells a story. And I see that they were trying other waters, and to improve.
Same with Dir En Gray, constantly shifting in styles and always finding ways to change, improve, and grow. And to give us NEW material.
Well I don't think Nickelback is copying anyone but himself. Someday and How you remind me are the only songs that sound exactly the same. I mean, if there's any other songs out there of his that fall under the same problem, then I'd like to see it! And, I completely see your point, but why is someone not making a leap warrant for so much hate? I've seen quite a few people say "He isn't improving or evolving!" But why would you like someone because they changed it up? Don't people like games/artists/musicians because they're good?
I get what everyone is saying about how he only "uses 4 chords" and copies himself, but I just don't get why everyone hates him for it? I mean, just because your unoriginal doesn't mean you're not good, it just means you're.. well, unoriginal. Kind of like if you're an artist who just does the same thing over and over again, the style might be really good, but that person doesn't try anything new, I doubt people would hate them for it.
I feel like there's more to it than just "unoriginality" because hating him for being unoriginal? Doesn't make sense. I mean, TNT and Dirty deeds by AC/DC? Same exact song, syllable by syllable. It's even played almost the same way. I know AC/DC isn't Nickleback, but from what I've seen on the internet so far, is that two of Nicklebacks songs sound familliar. If Nickelback's music is so unoriginal, then I'm really curious as to why. Sure, some songs are the same, but isn't that true for most artists? Things sometimes just end up sounding the same.
Which songs are you talking about that sound the same? I'd like some examples (because I really am just curious, this has been bugging me for a while!) because people just saying his music is the same isn't a sound point. I also always thought the work was put into account when you do something? To my knowledge, Nickelback had to work just like anyone else to get where he is. Sure he doesn't change it up, but changing it up, like I said, shouldn't be why someone is good or bad. It just means they're comfortable somewhere and they want to stay there.
I do understand, though. Branching out into new and different things is definitely a way to grow as a person. It would be nice to hear some new things from Nickelback, but I like them for, well, being Nickelback. A good chunk of their songs have a really nice hook, and those are always the songs you get stuck in your head, wether you like the song or not.
I don't know their songs, I just know I keep hearing nickelback on the radeo and I cna ALWAYS tell it's them, and I hear the same 4chords.
I guess in an artists perspective, let's say an artist does nothing but draw the same exact style, the same exact body types, and same exact facial expression in every single picture and they are substantially popular for it. Over 2 years of time, they show no changes, no improvements, and the whole gallery is nothing but repeats of the same exact thing over and over, just drawn slightly different (different characters, same faces and bodies)
Would you enjoy this artist? Or would you get bored/irritated at the fact that they aren't branching out beyond the same thing?
(FYI, there IS an artist on FA I feel this way about, I can note you about them if you want)
They do have a pretty recognizable sound. All their songs do kind of string together in that way, but I always just thought "It's because they're just Nickelback".
When you put it that way, it makes a lot of sense. I can completely see why that would bother people, But I just never thought people would hate a band so much for it, you know? I mean, I don't think Kanye west gets so much flaming, for example. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it's the fact that Nickelback is unoriginal that gets under peoples skins or.. something ELSE. But maybe there isn't?
(also I would be interested to see who it is you're talking about! =) )
Everybody has their own tastes in music. Personally, I don't like most mainstream stuff, especially bands who really use autotune.
A lot of people sing weird, and there's a lot of bands that you can't understand without the lyrics in front of you. (like Nirvana, and every screamo band ever) But why does Nickelback get so much hate for doing.. pretty small things? I mean, it's better than stealing the music from someone else.
Unless we're still talking about Creed XD I actually haven't heard of most of their music (I've really only heard "with arms wide open" "the beautiful" and "my sacrifice") but those three songs are pretty different from each other. Unless you just meant the style?
Also, those are all awesome bands <3 Tool being my favourite <3
But, I really cannot get into this band. Their sound and songs just don't do anything for me. And I think a preponderance of them playing on the radio all the time, when I'd rather listen to other music instead kind of makes me harbor less affection for them.
But, I don't really listen to the radio any more, so no problem there. :P
That might help, but I dunno. so effing tired right now >.<
an entertaining video on the subject, haha. It covers other things than Nickelback though about halfway.
The... *ahem* """""band""""" Nickelback..
And I suppose I just have a taste for the heavier stuff anyways >>
