Even though this is a Zappa-based group, I don't think it'd be fair to go any further with this without a Captain Beefheart music dump. If I didn't listen to him, I would have never have gotten into Zappa in the first place. And the fact that it hasn't even been a year since he died is another good reason.
Zappa was fantastic, don't get me wrong, but in my opinion, Don was the true mad genius of the era, who took it all to a whole new level. Even though he could be a huge asshole at times...

Years later, I actually was friends with the Van Vliet's next-door-neighbors in Trinidad, CA, where Don and Jan spent the rest of their lives. One night, when I was going to have dinner at my friends' house, I parked next to the Van Vliet's bathroom window, which was open at the time. Getting out of my car, I heard Don's unmistakable voice shout, "GET THAT FUCKING THING OFF MY LAP!" I confess, I lol'ed! Another most memorable Beefheart moment!
