I'm so sorry to hear about the cat :( I've had similar experiences and there are really no words that anyone can say to repair the kind of grief you must be going through.
Just know that it wasn't your fault, and you gave that little kitten the best times of it's life while it was still alive. The fact that it bothers you so much makes you a GOOD person
as there are way too many people, I've found, who see pets as toys that come and go, and it doesn't really matter if something happens to them because they can just be replaced.

I can't see how anyone could just... replace an animal. Every single one of them is an individual, even if they sometimes have similar personalities. Hell, even people have similar personalities very often. But it's not the personality that makes them unique, it's your love for them, and even if you find another cat of the same age, gender, and markings as Taco, he will never BE Taco. Taco will still have died because of negligence and not a damn thing could change it. v.v

I had the same sort of experience with my last dog Chance. He was an older dog however one day he started acting weird and then later that night he had a very serious seizure. We later found out he had a brain tumor... But the visions of his suffering would stay with me forever. And there was nothing I could do for him. He was part of our family, and we were helpless to do anything for him. I know how you feel. And you have my support.

It's tough to watch someone you love, human or animal, suffer. :(

*Gives supportive hugs.* I know the feeling. I had to watch my ferret die, feeling like I failed him... But I know he didn't fault me, and neither did your little kitten.

I guess it's not comforting to hear, but death is part of the cycle. It's sad to lose some one you loved, but they're moving on to better things now. At least you made the last couple of days that it had much, much better with the love you gave it.

lol, actually, you know... it doesn't bother me at all to hear one say that. It's true, death is just a cycle, and I do feel like I gave him love that made him happy. He purred like a little truck every time I touched him. I'm sure that even though he suffered, he had a good few days there. I'm just sad that he had so few days to begin with.

Skittle told me; my heart goes out to you. :( I adopted 2 kittens from the street; named them Angel and Taco (girl and boy, respectively). Just a week after having them, I woke to Angel, cold from death, lying by my bed because she had been too weak. I could have taken better care of her, but instead I didn't double check her age or even realize she was too young for solids and needed milk, to get stronger. She must have been four weeks, but by the time I came to this realization, she was already dead and there was nothing I could do but give Taco to another family with a better situation and more knowledge. I felt so ashamed that I cried for days, and denied myself the company of pets for at least two years.

I'm sorry, Mavu. :[ It's never easy. But at least he's in a better place now, as cheesy as that is. He probably loved you more than you loved him, and enjoyed every second he spent with you.

Cheesy or whatever, I like to think he went off to meet up with old Brutus and told him I'm still alive, lol

Kinda ironic we both named 'em Taco, lol. I thought it suited him. He was a Taco. Even if he was called Pongo at the shelter(and I misread it Ponyo for a bit)

He was a normal tabby/tiger striped somethingorother I don't know the name. But he had little white tuxedo markings and a white moustache beard combo.

hey, I felt like I should comment on this even though I'm not around much :>
first of all I'm really, really sorry about your loss. That's completely tragic and upsetting and it'll take time to heal... but please know that nothing could have been done about it, and it wasn't anybody's fault.

It sounds like you're really angry at the shelter, but at most shelters nowadays it's common procedure to microchip cats - cats that are microchipped and somehow get out have a much, much higher chance of being returned because all rescues/animal control sites/etc will do a basic chip scan before putting a cat up for adoption. The chance of a kitten having an adverse reaction to a chip is almost nonexistant... but it's sounds like that's what happened in this case, tragically. It sounds to me like the shelter is doing all they can to try and make it up to you but they're not trying to say you can just replace your kitten, it's just the right thing to do to offer a refund/new kitten. They would be terrible if they didn't do that. So in absolutely any case it's a tragic situation and I'm so sorry for you, but it's not right to blame the shelter. They had no way of knowing this would happen.

I'm mad at the shelter because I heard the way he screamed when they tried to chip him. I think it wouldn't have bothered me if it didn't sound like they had been forced to handle him roughly. I don't honestly think the chip did anything to him, but the way they held him. Generally, when handling a young animal, I stop if it sounds like it is in pain, and I'd want to have been gentle with one so small, and I would have even forgone chipping him until he was old enough to at least have been put down or his bones were stronger.

if the kitten sounded like he was in a lot of pain then you might be right... it is common for kittens to freak out at injections/handling like that even without pain, so it might not have been that they were hurting him. However it's also possible they injected the chip too deeply, into his muscles rather than sitting under the skin? If that's the case than that's terrible, and I'm so sorry. *hug*

I just think that this should be a procedure they have you pay for, then make you come back for perhaps when they are older if something like that happens. Like how I did not bathed my kitten Dean because the amount of force I thought was safe for him did not get him in the bathtub. Also because he hooked his claw into my throat then, but that is besides the point.

One of the shelter ladies was really nice about it, too. I know that lady was really upset as well, but there was another one that seemed... just like she shouldn't be running anything labeled 'humane'. I just hope it doesn't happen to another kitten. I don't really want compensation or anything. I might get my money back, since I feel getting a new cat right now isn't a good plan, but otherwise, I dunno. I just feel like it's impersonal. :(

They really should have checked the kitten's health again before giving them to it's new forever-home.
I can sympathize on the pain of losing a pet, especially one that you just got and fell in love at-first-sight.

True that. Those cats they kept with the kittens weren't particularly nice ones either. And cats aren't pack-type animals. :( he set-up seems strange to me, keep the solitary animals together in large rooms, and keep the pack animals solitary and confined. HMMM.

well, for dogs it can be an issue of, they can be aggressive in packs, especially if they where abused. They could injure other dogs, or provoke attacks on themselves.

i dunno enough about cats though.

Generally, I like to think that they temper test most of the animals out where people, especially young children, and put their hands through the grids. I like to think that humane societies are smarter than that :( I still want to be optimistic.

And cats are so territorial, I don't even know how they bring new ones into that place. D: I've seen what happens when two cats don't like each other, and even if they are generally docile cats, they can be fairly ruthless to other cats.

and just about every pet has it or does get it
breeders do it
shelters do it
pet stores do it
it's to insure their safety
I'm sure they didn't know he was going to react badly
maybe he just had seizures
I bought a dog once a Pomeranian from a store $800
brought him home and one week later he died in my arms on the way to the vet
he seized he actually had diabetes and the petstore people DIDN'T tell us.

it sounds like they were too rough with the darling. or, it's possible he was actually sick beforehand, and the way they handled him stressed him out, and it caused a reaction. i'm really sorry that that happened. the humane society is actually the best place to get a pet, because if you don't get one there, then.... they get put down. they don't care if it's a kitten or puppy, or a pregnant cat or dog, if they need room, they put them down. and by getting a pet there, you're saving a life. the pets are usually healthy, and they tell you if they know they're sick or not(like if they have some sort of condition like mange, or a disability of some sort). :< either way, RIP little kitty. ;A;
