Character Auctions
There is this new trend I see on FA getting more and more popular. I have seen it a few times so far that people try to milk even more money out of us furries by selling character concepts. I mean you can have a name or a picture copyrighted, but you can't copyright a character concept.
Additionally, are people that lazy to use their brain and come up with their own interesting and/or sexy character concept? Are they so desperate to buy even that from artists? The reason I am bitching about this is that I have seen a) Artists trying to get money that way and b) people actually bidding on something like that.
As an author and very creative person I just can't understand what it is so hard to work on a character to make him or her to something you love and enjoy.

If it helps, you can see it more like selling a piece of work that has an added bonus of rights for character usage.
Most of my disapproval falls upon the buyers, why? Because it shows a lack of personal creativity in a fandom where creativity is supposed to be part of everyone, it's everyone's imagination and universe where we create our own character, and built fursuits or stories out of it. And for someone not to be able to do so I feel speaks poorly upon them.
But one of the biggest problems I have with this, is if people decide to copy the character anyway, it'll create a whole slew of drama and bring about new debates across Furaffinity about character theft and intellectual property in general. I mean, when I created my character, I went for a Panther because my HS mascot was a panther, and then I picked my three favorite colors and went off that. Go figure 2 years later when I join the fandom, I find out there are many other characters similar to mine.

etc etc.
The point I'm trying to make is, if anyone ever came up to me and said I stole their character and they copyrighted it. I would laugh, because it's such a messy situation to get involved with, and it's on the internet. I've never dealt with copyrights or the such, but do you actually go the length to get it copyrighted? I thought it costs money do to. And if not, then how do you plan on protecting the character assets you are selling?
Pardon if my thoughts seem rather scattered, I just woke up after a long night, at 5 PM in the afternoon
But yes it's true a lot of people can put "similar" works out there that mimic, and as long as it isn't the same they can. I guess it all depends on what people want. Some really are fans of originality, and I do appreciate the ones that will support that and appreciate the efforts needed.
Though the world isn't perfect, I don't really expect people to be honorable all the time on matters, but gotta take the good with the bad I suppose. Still, trying this once and seeing how it goes. Hopefully people will still enjoy what my creativity plopped out one day lol. XD
I just see so many negative points of view upon the customers rather than you as the artist here. While people in the past have 'adopted' other characters. (Like mucks where people will Roleplay as Sonic, or road rovers etc etc) it's adopting a character to RP with. And this is you creating a character that they purchase like a car to use for themselves.
Granted if you produce a porsche and not a 1990's beat up honda civic but I just think overall the idea of someone else unable to think of their own character is silly, it's a persons imagination the one place where they should have MOST creativity and not have to buy it. That's just my personal opinion however, and good luck with your future ventures
What I would understand is, if he'd offer a commission to concept, draw and create a new character with a customer. As an artist
*picks nose*
...
*scratches head*
..."needs more cowbell."
As far as people being lazy. I do not agree with this. It simply does not make sense. Implying that someone would buy someone else's concept because they were too lazy to do it on their own would mean they have the creativity but have chosen not to use it. This is absurd. Not everyone has that kind of creativity. Who in their right mind would choose to pay (over one hundred dollars at times) for something they could do themselves? I think it is much more likely that these people either like the character enough to want to pay so much for it or want the ability to say that their character was created by a famous artist.
I will agree with you on the point that when you create your own character it is much more rewarding and fulfilling. It is yours and yours alone. But the vast majority, if not all of these people, already have a primary character and are looking for a design other than something to represent themselves.

Yeah, most of them are straight one animal or another, but their back stories and character designs are not!
But then again, not everyone has the imagination to create their own character from scratch.
