It'd be interesting to know what they actually made it in, and if an armature/supporting structure was involved...

I'm suspecting that either a welder and a properly designed and constructed armature was involved, or they merely used the advantage of many, many people and layered on materials that self-dry.

It's too accurate for paper mache alone, though... I think they used resin, too.

Nah, it can be done in paper mache. The article about it said they built the thing from the ground up, at the con while it was going, and in only a day no less 0.o. It's very very well done chicken wire and paper mache.
