coming out...as a fur

one word.... hard
It's hard being a fur these days
i often feel that we have become the primary taboo in this culture. whenever somebody brings up furries they always have negative things to say about it
but i always defend furs because i know who i am and i understand what we are
they confuse what we are and it always leaves me feeling like an outcast.
I wish they could see what i see, about how we all feel. I know how tough it can be when we show ourselves in public, but i am amazed at how authentic we are about it. We know who we are and they will probably never understand.
My mate is a non-fur and he still does not understand it... he only relates furs to being perverted beings... i don't know how to explain it to him.
Anybody have any thoughts? maybe a story or an ideal they can share?
i just have to say that each and every one of you are inspiring to me; to have such a strong community within us is enlightening and makes me feel determined to vanquish the dark views that are held upon our species.

There's nothing like media outlets with the sole purpose of profiteering, but alas i feel the the internet has its own ironic part of the blame. What keeps us together is also the same medium that gives the wrong perspective to the world surrounding the fandom.
All my non-furry friends hold the the furry=pervasion idea, but they didn't find it through the television, but rather through a simple google search.
That is true as well that the internet does hold water for the perversion as well, since doing a google search can pull up the most adult arts and what not, but that's if they have turned off the filed to not show those things. Otherwise then you mostly get to nonadult things in searches, but it will lead to the adult stuff. Anyway... If something isn't brought to light then it stays hidden and should stay that way.
