When do you just write things off?

Being a home owner, I love writing off my mortgage interest as a tax deduction.
Being a writer, I hate writing off trades that never get returned. I also hate debts that never get paid back.
I have a log of the money people owe me that I'm pretty sure I'll never see again. I also know every person who owes me something tangible. But when does one say "fuck it" and just accept that they'll never get what's owed? How long do you wait until you give up waiting for it? How does one carry on with any generosity when you've been screwed in the past? Why can people be so callous?
Do those questions even have answers? Why should I even bother? Does my work have any value?
I can't answer any of that.

HELL YES!
If I had half your talent, I'd probably be writing professionally. I would like to apologize for the fandom, it's disrespectful what happens to writers, seeming to get shafted more times then a few (yes I've been on that end too.) But that is not a reason to degrade the talent you have. There are some people out there that don't give a rat's backside and that's fine by me, I'll let them be retarded.
There are people out there with talent, some of which even being recognized for said writing, (Alps Sarsis comes to mind immediately.) We writers just got a much tougher fight to the top, and a much smaller top once we get there. Don't give up, everything comes back around and I pity those idiots when karma decides to give them a swift kick between the legs.
Just my two cents.
