I do not get it. Why can't one just go outside with a bunch of friends and actually play football? Why do furries have to be involved?

Eh, I dunno. I'm still all for unsponsored football with friends, where you wind up tackling people through lawn chairs and things. Violent as hell, but everyone seems to have fun.
That, and I guess I don't really see where there would be any audience for this sort of thing besides furs. And we do not number in the amounts that would sell tickets. We, loosely including myself.
