I'm looking up the events and I'm a little confused as to what caused them. However, London's at least seems politically motivated. You could have lived in Vancouver over here in Canada when the city decided to lose its shit over not winning the Stanley Cup. Either way, that is a seriously crappy situation.
They are not politically motivated.
What happened was that a police officer shot a man who, allegedly, shot at him. No-one is entirely sure of the details of this, and enquiries are happening.
But this caused a peaceful protest. Which was fine.
Then the riots happened on the back of this, but are in reality, unrelated to this event. Its simply about people going out and causing as much havoc as they can, looting as much as they can, and doing this because everyone else is. Its lost any relation it might ever have had to the original protests.
Thats what makes it so fucked up; its purely about causing havoc, there is no other reason.
It's like my fiancee has pointed out before: the assholes always come out in force when stuff like this happens. They're usually the ones who, like you've said, have nothing to do with the event that trigged a mob in the first place, but they're going to use the escalating riots as an excuse to really turn up the awful behaviour. I hope things clear up there soon, though. Riots are never a good thing.
I agree there. Ashamed and saddened as well. People do such stupid things and then follow blindly like sheep. I hope they get this mess sorted. It really is for no reason.
Are you anywhere near a hot spot? I'm in kingston and really praying we don't get hit tonight. There's police everywhere. I'm ashamed to be in this country. Most of my family emigrated to New Zealand in 2009 and I'm just waiting for uni to be over before I can join them. Now I just want to leave even worse... these idiots suck so hard.
Also, I really wish people would stop complaining about how the police aren't doing anything. I have very close people in the police and they're working awful hours and have had all their leave cancelled. If the police were doing more then they'd be criticised for brutality and unnecessary force. When they hold back they get criticised for not doing anything. Either way they can't win.
If you are near a hotspot I hope you stay safe. :/
Its in norwich now :( Norwich is like my second home town, I spent a lot of my teen years there and my friends live there. There are some cop cars out in my town, but nothing here at the moment. I honestly think lowestoft has nothing worth looting, and Im not joking. We don't have many big lucrative businesses here so we'll probably be ok.
I think its PC world in norwich that has been looted so far.
Eurgh, these people are so... I can't even think of a word to describe them. Thankfully tonight seems to have been much quieter than last night. Let's hope it all starts to die down soon. Should never have started in the first place though.
I can understand living somewhere with nothing worth looting though. My home town in a quiet little town on the kent coast... and the only thing there is old people. lol
lol, yeah, there is something to be said for living somewhere boring :P
I've always hated london, never go there unless I absolutely have to. I just find it inherently intimidating and pushy. Im sure there are lovely areas, but you have to have money to live in those!
I've never liked London. I honestly never expected to end up living here. I was kind of pushed into attending uni though, and Kingston was the only one I ever really wanted to go to. I guess I'm lucky that it's greater london so isn't quite as insane as central. It's pretty quiet if you know where to look around here. ;) I suffer in crowds though, so I tend to avoid going into the town centre on my own unless I really need to as it's still a pretty busy place. lol Was weird to see it so empty this afternoon though, with all the police walking around. Was like a ghost town.
I agree with the needing money though. Kingston is stupidly expensive, and I wouldn't be able to afford living here if I'd applied a year later for uni. My student loan is the only reason I can afford to stay here. If you're not a student then you've gotta be pretty rich to live here!
perfectly understandable. looking at what footage germany's TV brings, especially whole blocks burning alight because they feel a little bit neglected... well, burning your 'hood will certainly improve your wretched lifes, you punks. :P
I hope this goes over soon. especially without any more casualties... except maybe some gang leaders, that is. which seem to fuel the riot from behind.

Here's a good take on the subject:
