"No boot device detected: system Halted"

While I was out today, my mom called me, telling me she was having some trouble starting her computer. I get home and see the following message: "No boot device detected: system Halted." Nice.
Well, I know what I'm going to be doing tomorrow...
I'm just hoping it's not a hardware problem, something tells me it will be. Well, I think I know what to do, but if anyone has ever had this problem, tell me what you did.

I remember having something similar to that problem once when I first got my computer. Unfortunetly since I don't know as much about computers as I should I had to have my dad fix it. Not sure what he did though. Sorry. Thankfuly it wasn't hard to fix (only took him about five minuets)

I was able to get a linux boot disk to work, so I'm guessing the hard drive is done. Unfortunately, I don't have any computers that I can test it on, so I can only guess with what I have.
