Worldcraft: ROUND SIX
Not quite ready to give up on this Group just yet! Come on guys, help us keep this thing alive through the summer!
Welcome to Round 6 of Worldcraft!
As before, you will have +/-3 weeks to work on an entry of your choice.
The deadline for this round is SUNDAY, AUGUST 28TH at midnight.
1) Artists!
Do you want to join the contest in creating creatures, insects or environments?
Yes? Reply here so we can add you to the list of participants! (no notes)
2) Donators!
If anyone is willing to give the winner a prize (a free sketch or something) please contact us by sending a note.
Your icon will be added to our front page, along with what you will give the winner(s).
If we can’t find anyone willing to donate a prize, we’ll try to find something else to give our winner.
RULES
- Have fun! (Very important!)
- You have about three weeks to complete your entry.
- The deadline is August 28th.
- Once you’re ready, send us a NOTE with the link to your entry.
- The title of the note must be ENTRY 06.
- Every submission must be accompanied by a bit of text that describes how your creature lives, eats, etc. (Unless your submission is a story or a landscape, of course).
The description of your creature will also be judged and will count toward the points you receive, so be sure to put some effort into it!
- You may draw as many images as you wish, but you must specify which two you want judged. If you do not, two will be picked at random.
- Contestants can't be judges; it messes with the scoring system.
- You can make a sketch, line art, fully colored drawing with or without background, write a story featuring a creature, make something out of paper-mâché or sculpt something in clay
Anything goes! What you want make is completely up to you.
Although we encourage people to be creative in many different ways, there are some things we won't allow:
- Terrain generators (Terragen, Bryce, DAZ Studio, etc...)
- Pre-made characters (Second Life characters or environments, etc...)
These programs require no artistic skill since it generates everything itself.
It does require the ability to compose a beautiful scene or character, but that's not the point of this contest.
HOWEVER, we do not wish to be completely unfair towards those who like this kind of artwork.
If there is a large enough demand, we will expand our contest to include a separate section for computer generated artwork.
Currently we will not accept these types of entries.
THE PLANET
This planet has formed around a young star and life managed to evolve and flourish at a steady pace. As with most planets forming, there was a lot of volcanic activity and it’s moon is quite large. This interaction of tidal forces causes the planet to feature very volcanically active periods at certain parts of the planet. Most notably and as expected, these are the areas where the tectonic plates are shifting the most. At the fault lines of the planet, volcanoes rise and fall; dominating the landscape with fire and ash.
Water has been around in great quantities and this causes a very surreal sight on the surface. Drenched and humid, the flora has evolved to take on a swamp-like characteristic.
Over time, the plants have evolved so that they started adapting even to the sulphurous fumes or acid rain that appear near the volcanoes. It’s therefore very common to see the land reclaim its place after an eruption at a very fast rate. How these plants can turn an arid place like a volcano’s slop into a lush morass is currently unknown.
Due to the volcanoes, both above as well as below the surface of the oceans, lots of water is being turned to steam which in turn rains down in massive storms. These storms saturate the soil and allow the vegetation to spread. Some swamps have been drastically transformed by the volcanoes near them, the sulfur transforming them into sulfuric acid pools whose fumes are deadly to nearly everything in the vacinity.
Although the volcanoes’ activity can blanket parts of the sky with thick clouds of ash, the plants and creatures have evolved to cope with longer periods of decreased temperature due to lack of sunlight. If anything, certain plants explosively grow during this time, due to an increase in nurtrients from the ash and the death of weaker competition.
Creatures
1) These creatures can only be found on active volcanoes. They live close near fissure vents and are seen mostly during eruptions.
2) Avian creatures built to dive and navigate through the web of vines and plants in swamps. Their favorite food is a species of grubs only found in the deepest regions of the swamp.
3) A creature that evolved long legs to navigate the treacherous swamps.
4) A serpentine predator with a highly venomous neurotoxin. It hunts on the slopes of volcanoes as well as the waters of the swamps.
5) A creature that drags its victims underwater to drown and devour them.
6) A rare and massive creature with a very slow metabolism; the swamp tends to grow over it when it hibernates.
7) A grazing organism that is built to survive the extreme heat and lack of resources when the volcano is active, but when the volcano is inactive and plants become bountiful, the grazers also reproduce and become bountiful; it's a typical r-strategist in an extreme environment.
8) One of the only organisms that can survive near the sulfuric acid pools, it has evolved to be able to breath the toxic air.
9) A glider that uses the thermals thrown off from the heat of the volcanoes to travel vast distances in search of food.
Vermin
1) An insectoid creature that looks terrifying. It is however completely harmless and lives from tree sap in the swamps.
2) A species of butterfly-like insect that takes a very long time to grow to adulthood. They spend the majority of their life as a small grub in the waters of the swamps. Although they grow slowly, they reproduce at an astonishing rate while still being at the larval stage.
3) A predatory insect that lays its eggs inside other creatures.
4) An amphibious invertebrate that attaches to its host body with suckers.
5) A small fish that travels in massive schools in the murky water of the swamps, its serrated scales lacerating any soft bodied creatures it swims past.
Flora
1) A strange plant that thrives on the cooled down magma. They are capable of storing great amounts of water.
2) A swamp tree that resembles one giant system of roots. It’s mostly found to be active after a great fire of volcanic eruption reclaiming the land.
3) Scrubbers. These tall spires grow high into the sky and keep the air clean. Despite being few in numbers, these massive plants can easily maintain the balance on the planet.
Landscape
1) The burning mountains. These super volcanoes erupt from the ground and spread death and decay all around with a fiery power.
2) The lush swamps that reclaim the land lost to fire and magma.
3) The sulfuric acid pools that appear when a volcano deposits to much sulfur into a swamp.
When you send us your note, always mention your choice.
e.g.: Vermin2, Creature4, etc…
The deadline for your entries is Sunday AUGUST 28TH at midnight!
Entries submitted after the deadline will still be faved and hosted, but won’t be judged.
