Kengi has that model as well and it red ringed on him earlier this year. He went several rounds with Microsoft over them not being able to even guarantee he'd get his system back instead of another refurb'd one. Best you can do is try and fix it yourself, find someone who can, or get a new one.
(We got a new one btw and are just keeping the old one for collection)

Yep, this is correct (to my knowledge). When my 360 red-ringed a year or two ago I was pretty much told "You will get back a refurbished 360 that will work" and it absolutely wasn't the same one. You don't send your hard drive, though, and I would imagine that they would replace yours with a 360 of the same type--may be worth shooting an email to M$'s customer service to see if that's the case.

Otherwise there's some game stores and such that will do 360 repairs for you (and locally!), so you could do some Googlin' and see if there's any such services nearby.

Nope, it's not even one of the same type. We asked if we could even get a guarantee on getting a Halo edition back and were told no. Had it been a regular one, fine, but those were special and that was his "Coming home from Iraq" gift.
