Take some cues from Mother Nature and keep the color schemes somewhat plausible. Save the bright hues for clothing, which helps strengthen your character's identity without resorting to bizarre fur patterns.
People should use clothing more often on their characters, I think. I can't think of a better way to separate them from the pack without looking desperate about it.
What FriskyWoods said. Keep the colors somewhat natural. I think people depend too much on bright colors to stand out. It works for birds and reptiles; most mammals, not so much. Unless you're a bird, you shouldn't be bright green.
I have some mammal characters with bright colors, but if they were to ever be fursuits, I'd tone the colors down. It just looks better. Sparkledogs can be cute in art, but fursuits tend to look best with natural, or almost natural, coloring. Just my opinion.
Go with an uncommon species. My first char is a jackal, but after spending time in the fandom, I added a chameleon and a parrot; thinking about adding a bat too. And as Friskywoods mentioned, the wardrobe makes the charater. Check my profile for fursona references, I think you'll like them.
