I'm sorry that you had to hear that from your mom, coming out isn't easy. I remember when I came out and all the awful things my "father" said to me.

This is why I never came out.
I'm comfortable with my family in the dark.
It's my private personal life, why would I tell them anyway?
It's just asking for shortcomings and disappointment, sometimes worse. :T

I'm sure you don't know this, but among some hardcore star wars fans there is a saying. It comes from some of the expanded universe, and goes, "Aliit ori'shya tal'din."
It translates to "Family is more than bloodline."
There are people who care about you, even if your mother is no longer one of them.

Got a nasty email from my parents the other day cuz one of my cousins was snooping around on my FaceBook page and told my mom and got a nasty email from them, called them later and she said nasty things to me, meh parents just don't understand what true happiness is. It shouldn't matter race, sex, age etc.. it's the fact that those people are happy being who they are no matter what sexual preference they may have. i think it's just sad that these things happen. You have all my support as i know what it's like.

Heh, I countered similar arguments from my parents by asking them if they were more interested in my sperm's reproductive abilities than my happiness (also, "did you raise a kid or a walking gonad?"). It tends to put things in perspective.

HOtter, its important not to read to much into how your mother responded. Sometime it is just the shock of it all and often in time they come to realize they have said something they never really meant. I was again just the shock of it. I know several guys who got disowned only to have their parents apologize after having some time to consider the situation and reevaluate it.

Sorry to hear it was harsh, but in time the pain will fade hopefully and things will be recanted.

sorry to hear. still, give it some time. if your parents are worth the 89 cents of chemicals they're made of, they'll come to accept it and move on.

Hey man, you know we're all here for you. I had a bad coming out experience too, with my parents telling me I had ruined my life etc, etc. I can tell you though, it will get better. Even if it means moving out and building a life of your own separate from your parents entirely. The best advice I can give from my experience, don't pressure your mom. Let her figure it out in her own time, and if she'll let you, do anything you can to let her know you still love her.

Mine refuse to believe me, but I told them. I never told them they had to like it. It'll be awkward for a while but hopefully they'll get over themselves and still treat you like a son.

I can tell you right now that it takes big balls to come out. I never have (even though I'm only bi) and know for a fact that both sides of my entire family would disown me if they ever found out. People always say that it takes courage to stand up and be yourself, but others tend to forget that that when it's put into this context. It's sad. My best wishes to you in the hope things work out in the end.

As I told my mom, she wasn't happy at all. Telling things I don't want to repeat anymore. Fact is. she needed a while to accept (I needed that time too). Now where good friends at all. So give her some time.

I couldn't imagine how difficult it is to come out. However I'm sure that you give it time, she will accept it and apologize. You're an amazing artist, have the sweetest boyfriend and a lot to be happy for :) don't let this rough patch get you down for too long. I think most of the people here are right, she probably needs time to properly think about it. To most straight people a gay person is "one of them". Someone they don't know. If she's capable of it after some reflection she'll think of being gay differently.

Uhg.. give it time, dude. The first bit is generally the roughest. Hell, upon my coming out, my Dad told me I was going to bring shame to the entire family and that he'd start buying dresses for me instead of pants - since apparently I wasn't a man anymore.. then he threw the phone at me and stormed out of the house.

A few years later he is begging me to come back home and tries, every chance he gets, to patch things back up with me.


It will take time, but I'm sure things will work out. You really don't know me that well, but if you need a shoulder you can cry on or someone to talk to who won't judge.. I'm here, yea?

Well... that... ouch. Coming out is always difficult, and always received differently. I'm sure it's just your mom's initial reaction, and she'll soon come to accept it.

My entire family knows, I guess not all of us are so lucky. She may come around eventually, the shock of it all might have gotten to her.

So sorry to hear that. My dad was super supportive but I've had so many friends whose parents weren't. I knew a guy whose mother threw him out of the house on Christmas one year.
