Would it be wrong to ask for donations?

Hello.
I need some honest answers here folks. I've been toying with the idea for some time, but I don't know if it would be right.
If I did open myself to donations, I wouldn't use the money on somthing stupid like a video game or computer. I need the money for legal reasons concerning my characters and stories. I'd have to get around $600 - $800 for the legal fees and I don't have that kind of cash.
I know that money is short for everyone, so please let me know if this is a good idea or a bad idea.
