The new show actually has real stories, overarcing plots, character development and characters with actual distinct personalities. Everything the old shows lacked, plus much cuter character designs. Also, the creator Lauren Faust (who also worked on Powerpuff Girls) wanted parents to watch the show alongside their kids, which is why adults can laugh at the jokes too. And sometimes people want something cute and positive without any cynicism.
