Second life?

Ok, the idea of learning to make my own models has been gnawing my brain for quite som time now, especially given my prospective major.
What I want to know is, what is the deal with second life? I know there's more to it than the furry stuff.
I was just wondering (read: hoping) that there's more to do there than just boink yourself rotten. Do you need a premium account to get your own models? Can you model/skin environmental objects like trees, houses, etc? What about geography, can that be manipulated as well?
I want to see this as an opportunity to actually work towards experience in the field I wish to join, and also a chance to meet others with experience (modeling experience, you randy bastards).
All info you got is appreciated, including what sorts of progs you like to use for modeling within SL. File formats, all that mess. Give it to me hard!

From what I've seen, you can create custom animations on your own avatars, at least...
NPCs? I have no idea.
Second Life is completely graphical.
As for various text based roleplay environments, it depends on the rules set by the administrator of the server.
