I'm a fan of Asus laptops myself. I have a u50f myself and have used it for Photoshop and gaming. It's super thin and light. I got it over a year ago, but I have had a problem with the fan which they did fix free of charge. There are a lot of things you need to consider, though. Like where can you shop? Online or only in stores? You might want to have a look at cnet.com and look up their laptop reviews. If you really want power and money is no object go look at alienware's stuff, it's all supposed to be amazing. I wouldn't know, I'm too poor to get my paws on one. *sweatdrop*

As Lucrece said, Asus is a good brand. It's rare, compared to other brands, to hear of someone having really bad experiences with their stuff.

Personally, I'm rather fond of Acer's stuff myself. This is from experience with other hardware, though, and merely an opinion somewhat biased by brand loyalty. :P

If anything, figure out what you're wanting to get, find it on Newegg (where you should be shopping anyway!), and look at user reviews. No better way to get an impression of it than to read about the experiences others have had.
