My boyfriend works at a media store, and they're selling their copies of SF643D (what an acronym) early, so I got mine today!
Gotta say, this is a beautiful game! I've only played through the first two levels so far, taking my recommended 15 minute break, but man, it's so damned pretty.
Some of this stuff you might already know, but I'll try to give it a more hands-on run-down.
So, new things:
- Graphics! It looks a little like Command, really, except the character designs are not so chibi. Maybe a little bit better. The 3D works really well with this game. SF64 has inherent depth in the game play, so the 3D makes it lush and nice. Every now and then I move a little too much while playing, though, and the graphics split. Trying to find a good setting other than FULL 3D GO!!!
- New voice actors. Trying to decide whether I love them or hate them. Most of the lines sound almost the same as before, inflection-wise, but I've noticed at least two script changes! Also, the little tanuki mechanic in training mode has a deep, sexy voice.
- 3D Gyroscopic navigation. You have the option to play Gyro or Classic, with each having slightly different features. I'll have to play with it more. It's a little hard for me to understand. Playing with it might be fun, but it's gonna be like riding a bike for the first time. It's nifty, though. Some of the menu screens respond, and you can look around at things off-screen. My problem I had when training with it is that you have to turn with the screen. I'm used to moving my controller and watching a stationary screen, so I tilt in response to that habit instead of moving with the 3DS. It's a bit complicated to explain. More on that once I get to play with it more.
- Game save. At last, you can start up in the middle of a run. Really useful, since now it likes to remind you to take breaks.
- Level select. Once you play though the levels, you can select individual levels to get the high score. Sounds good, but I can't imagine how I'm gonna get Sector Z without the bombs from Zoness. We shall see >:3
- New VS. battle system. Haven't tried it yet. This game is developed in part with Q-Games, the guys who did Command, so hopefully they learned what works and what doesn't from last time. I'll let you know.
The levels are the same, but at some points it feels like Nintendo completely redid them from scratch. There are noted improvements in environment, and some things just seem closer together than before.
SO, should you buy it? Well, so far, I definitely don't regret it, and I could use some homies to battle with!
EDIT:
Zoness looks incredible. Stealthfox was questioning lighting improvements, and boy, there are some good ones, especially Zoness.
The sound and music has improved, though it's still MIDI. A couple of arrangements didn't emphasize the parts I'm used to hearing, but overall, there's good use of stereo sound and some nice accompaniment I've never noticed before.
AND there's a second set of credits with an interesting piano interpretation of the StarFox theme. You can listen/download here, or wait until you get the game to experience it for yourself. I don't wanna spoil your fun :3
There's no one on the online battle system, of course, but there's a one player mode which is actually rather stylish. Power-ups make things quite interesting, and the courses are nice to look at. There are some unlockable stages as well.
Speaking of which, I unlocked a special goodie on my first run, and I've been informed by Peppy that if I play through without starting from a save point, I'll unlock something else. So, there are things to look forward to!
I'm excited to play it again :D Reliving these stages in such a beautiful environment is exciting. The improvement is overwhelming.
A note on the voice actors, I'm glad they redid the vocals, but I didn't feel there was any improvement in the acting. I like Falco better in the original, and Slippy better in this one. Mike West came back to do vocals, so most of his are about same.
I'm happy that some moments of dialog are clarified; there are a few lines that make way more sense.
One thing I'm not happy with is Andross's laugh. It doesn't match the animation, which I found distracting.
---
Overall, a brilliant overhaul, so far. Get this game so I can play with someone online!
