World Building

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."
-William Shakespeare
Okay, so one of my greatest strength/flaws of mine is getting wrapped up in the details. While details can be important and add a lot to any creative venture, at times I find it all too easy to get caught up in them and end up agonizing over the specifics of something that perhaps need not be detailed.
So I figured I’d ask you all a question or two to try to head off some future frustration. When it comes to getting familiar with a fictional setting, be it fantasy or science fiction, what do you feel are the most important things one should know to understand it? If you were to play a tabletop RPG with a GM who made his own campaign world from scratch, what elements do you feel are “need to know” for you to feel comfortable that you can make and play a character that fits into the world that you can have fun with?
I’ve been making some decent headway into that world building project I mentioned in the previous journal (even if a core element went a completely different direction that the original conceptualization) but just recently I’ve been feeling like I’m beginning to “sweat the small stuff”, and so am stepping back and getting some outside thoughts on the matter, to perhaps get me refocused in the right direction. It’s almost amazing how scatterbrained I can be nowadays while being creative.
