The Greatest Single Cause of Atheism

There's this Christian metal band I've started listening to called War of Ages. There's an intro track on their Fire From the Tomb album, and there's a speaker at the very beginning who makes a very valid point.
"The greatest single cause of Atheism in the world today is Christians. Who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-9hetci8jc
Jesus may have died for our sins. But some Christians take that and basically use it as a get out of hell free card.
I mean, it's true that no one is perfect and we will mess up. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to be better. All these Christians who just don't put forth any effort to be better, people look at them from the outside and all they see is hypocrite.

In my experience of things, I find that people seldom become atheists because it struck them as a rational or reasonable thing to do; I'd imagine such shifts of belief are actually a lot rarer than some would like to think. Instead, in most cases I've come across, they get put off by other Christians acting hypocritically, which then leads them to reject Christianity as a reaction against that behaviour.
They are the prime example here.
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
They insist that the world is going to hell for not following Christ, yet they themselves go against the Bible in doing so.
Now the real difference between cult and religion is that a religion tends to focus on a deity or a major disciple of a religion, if a deity is not present. A cult tends to focus around the creator of the cult who tends to claim himself as a deity.
the only source of Jesus existence is from the gospels.
Just as the only source of Heracles existence is through Greek poetry
the three major religions of the world all acknowledging his existence is good enough for me, it may not be for you, but it is for me
He could have been loosely based on one of many people claiming to be the Messiah,
If you dont take the gospels as a historical source why take the Koran?
It has its own supernatural claims like Muhammad flying into heaven
Jesus is also mentioned in the book of Mormon
but these versions are slightly different.
so obviously a watered down mortal version of the Christ had to be added, so that the founders of said religions could seem more important in comparison.but these books were written hundreds of years after his supposed birth.
jews acknowledging his existence, should grant some credibility to the idea of Jesus
yes the idea but not confirmation of his existence, much less his divine abilities.
in sexual RP Spanking
though what caused you to think that if I may ask?
what ever your beliefs are secular or religious ...you seem offended at the notion at questioning or discussing ideas, no matter how civil
to the point of just responding with nothing more then immature remarks, probably expecting and hoping for a negative response...
and both smug and stupid to claim to not care
yet waste your time in letting me know that
I could answer that for you,
no I did not become an atheist simply because other people were doing it ,
I did wonder why there were people who did not believe my religion when I was a christian, raised with the mind set that all other religions are of the devil etc.
and it went on from there .
I only bring this up to illustrate the original purpose of the quote because it brings to life a new thought to this discussion. The quote was originally attached to a song called "what if I stumble" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg6HedZ4xGs) And the goal of said song was to bring to light the beauty of grace. It speaks of our desire to be popular/famous/etc in the world but the burden of perceived necessary perfection as a christian that is drawn if success is achieved.
This can also be brought down to a person to person level. For many people in the world the only glimpse of god that they see is US. This song and quote asks the question "what face of God are you showing?" It can be a major burden on a person knowing that the world is watching you and applying your actions to God. But god never said the road was easy or the burden light. The song also shows the grace that is Gods. He says to us "I know your not perfect, I built you that way. But my love for you IS perfect and will never change".
It is on us to try our VERY UTMOST to be worthy of that love. We aren't supposed to be perfect. But we ARE called to be a shining example. When we take on the "follower of Christ" mantle we are making a pledge to be more than JUST human. We are living as ambassadors for the kingdom of god. Realize that you WILL stumble, fall, and often times make a complete fool of yourself. The question is, What are you going to do when you pick yourself back up?
There's no doubt that the band makes a point (and I'm gonna check them out!), but most of the atheist bunch is a pretty immature one so I hate to make excuses for them
Seriously.. what WOULD Jesus do? Certainly not half the things people do in His name.
or have to mutilate myself in order to forgive.
He allowed that people to mutilate him for a crime that was valid under Jewish law, its blashphemy to claim to be god
and under old testament law like many other rules(supposedly set up by the same god Jesus is), require death as punishment.
He allowed them to mutilate him because that was the only way he can forgive
Your god requires blood for grace
before that lambs had to be sacrificed ...bled and burned.
Jesus was to represent the final blood sacrifice.
because your god cannot forgive
Have you ever needed a blood sacrifice to forgive someone?
it wasn't the people
but the claim of the existence of God, without evidence just blind faith.
If you read the bible although there are good verses ,there are also verses that may conflict with peoples morality since these some of these books were written during savage times,....by men , not by god, or men who were telepathically linked to god.
Amen to the Journal post.
Maybe we dislike your book because it is fucking sick and backwards... This boring... can we go murder an entire country first? Oh, wait... we need a reason to commit genocide, or god will get mad. Let me take my concubine and throw her to the horny mod outside my house. Once they rape her until she dies, we cut her up into 12 pieces, then send her all over the land. Now we can go commit genocide. Yep, the Bible is a clean, loving book.
Hey, don't look at me like I'm crazy, I'm just pointing out things in your book.
