Reference sheet question

When considering getting artwork comissioned of your character(s), how important is it to artists to have some kind of style sheet to work off of?
I can understand needing one if the character is uniquely coloured or an unusual hybred. But what if you are just a plain tiger, or bear, or iksar? (Well the iksar might require a sheet I guess, he's unusual)

Well for me I think its important because I like ti keep certain features the same, stripes, the nose, shades of the eyes... etc. it also helps with the underbelly as well, how wide, any extra hairy bits... etc.
